EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team closed out the 2001 regular season campaign with a 2-0 victory over Kent State Friday afternoon at Old College Field. For the Spartans, it was their second-straight shutout win as they blanked Toledo, 2-0, on Wednesday. Sophomore goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Madison, Wis.) has now shutout opponents seven times this season. MSU is now 10-7-2 while Kent State drops to 6-11.
Heidi Lutz (Jr., San Ramon, Calif.) got MSU on the board just 1:56 into the game when she scored off a feed from Trisha Kenny (So., Saginaw) and Kristi Arrington (So., Novi). Arrington continued her hot streak in the 17th minute scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Lutz and Tiffany Laskowski (So., Troy) drew assists.
Heller did her part in net to keep the game in the Spartans' hands as she made two diving saves midway through the first half to keep the game at 2-0. She finished with four saves.
"It was a nice way to send off the seniors," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We wanted to make it a positive day. These six seniors have meant a lot to the MSU program."
Michigan State will next compete in the Big Ten Tournament which begins Nov. 8 in West Lafayette, Ind.
