ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team (6-6-2) was defeated by Oakland (13-2), 2-1, on Thursday afternoon in Rochester, Mich. Playing in very windy conditions, the team with the wind at its back scored the goals in both halves as Oakland scored twice in the first half and Michigan State scored once in the second.
Oakland got on the scoreboard first in the 15th minute when Shelly Piccirillo found the back of the net after the Spartan defense gave the ball away in the box. Just over ten minutes later, the Golden Grizzlies scored again on an Anita Rapp goal from Natalie Simas. Oakland took advantage of the wind in its back in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 10-1.
With the wind at their back in the second half, the Spartans tried to turn the tables. Michigan State did record six second-half shots, but did not score until late when Kristi Arrington (Novi, Mich.) scored an unassisted goal in the 87th minute. It was the second-straight game in which Arrington scored.
Michigan State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 21 at noon vs. Minnesota at Old College Field.
