MSU's Adam Hourani (Lansing) was the lone Spartan to win a singles match defeating Derya Rose in three sets (6-2, 5-7,6-3). After dropping the first set to 36th ranked Michael Kogan, MSU's Goran Topalo (Czech Rep.) came back and won the second set 6-4 only to fall in the third 4-6.
In the doubles competition it came down to the last match. After Tulane's Kogan and Mikko Viljanen won at No. 1 doubles and MSU's Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) won at No. 2 doubles it was left to the No. 3 doubles pair of Topalo and Rodrigo Abucham (Sau Paulo, Brazil). They fought hard to come back from a deficit of 3-6 to bring it to 6-7 but could not pull it out, giving up the doubles point with a 6-8 loss.
At the next home match vs. Louisiana-Lafayette on Sat., Feb. 3, the Spartans will honor the 1951 Big Ten Championship men's tennis team who were the first MSU varsity team of any sport to win a Big Ten Championship. The team will also be recognized at the next home men's basketball game on Sun., Feb. 4 against Purdue.
