The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams both started the new year with dual meet losses in Hawai'i yesterday. Head coach Jim Lutz, however, was pleased with the outcomes.
The Spartan women were shaded by Illinois, 124-119, in the team's conference opener. The men, meanwhile, lost to third-ranked Texas A&M, 136-102.
"The women came down to 1/100th of a second of winning," said Lutz. "I thought they did a good job of competing with a never-say-die attitude."
Pacing the Spartans was sophomore Kate Duncombe, who placed first in the 100-meter backstroke and, along with teammates Debbie O'Neil, Ildiko Szekely and Jutta Renner, took top honors in the 400-meter medley relay. Other MSU first-place finishers were sophomore Jessica Brutz in the 50-meter freestyle and junior Carly Weiden, who won both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.
Three MSU men's swimmers earned first-place finishes against Texas A&M. Sophomore Joe Brennan was first in the 1000-meter freestyle, senior John Munley was the top finisher in the 200-meter freestyle and freshman Lars Neubauer won the 100-meter breaststroke.
"Texas A&M is a great team, but I thought our guys did a nice job," commented Lutz. "We have some thin spots in our lineup, but we got an outstanding effort. They did the university proud." MSU's next action on the mainland takes place in East Lansing on Saturday, Jan. 13. The Spartan men host Northwestern at noon EST with the women's team taking on Purdue at 4 p.m.
