EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team lost their conference opener to Northwestern this afternoon in East Lansing. The Spartans fell short with a score of 81 against Northwestern's 108.
Sophomore Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) was an influential swimmer for the Spartans, placing first in the 1000 freestyle (9:30.91), and the 500 free (4:38.33). Brennan was also a member of the second place 400 free relay team (3:05.08) of John Munley (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Scott Shafer (Centerville, Pa.), and Rick Nichols (Mercersburg, Pa.). Other first place finishes include Munley in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.95, and the relay team of Nichols, Mike Tingley (Louisville, Ky.), Lars Neubauer (Meerbusch, Germany), and Alex Ebner (Okemos, Mich.), swimming a 3:27.69 in the 400 medley relay.
Head coach Jim Lutz stated, "I know the swimmers are still tired from training (over winter break). In many of the races we were only behind by the blink of an eye. We challenged really well today, so I wasn't disappointed by the loss."
The Spartan men face Purdue next Saturday in East Lansing.
