EAST LANSING, Mich - The Michigan State men's soccer team fell to two time defending national champion Indiana on Sunday by a score of 1-0 before a crowd of 1,215 at Old College Field. With the loss, MSU falls to 4-3, while Indiana improves to 6-3.
The Spartans and Hoosiers battled all day, trading scoring chances. The Spartan's Scott Babinski (Jr., Livonia) had a chance just eight minutes into the first half when he fired a shot high over the head of IU goalkeeper T.J. Hannig. Inidana also missed an opportunity off a direct kick just outside the box with 7:59 remaining in the first half. Spartan goalkeeper T.J. Lieckfelt (Sr., Sterling Heights) made six saves in the loss and came up big on several occasions to keep the game scoreless.
Indiana's Ryan Mack broke the scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 84th minute.
"We now just have to work hard and win our next game, you can't fault our effort in today's game," said MSU coach Joe Baum. "We wanted to come out and go at them today and play regular MSU soccer."
