EAST LANSING, Mich. - One day after upsetting Wisconsin, Michigan State couldn't pull off the same magic against Illinois. The Spartans fell to Illinois by a score of 4-0 on Friday at the Big Ten Men's Tennis Championship held in Bloomington, Ind. The loss ends MSU's season with an overall record of 8-20. Illinois heads into the semifinals with an overall record of 20-3.
Michigan State didn't have much success in doubles play as Illinois took the first point of the match by winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. With the doubles point determined, play was abandoned at No. 2 doubles due to tournament guidelines. The Fighting Illini quickly captured the match by picking up victories at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles. All other singles contests were abandoned at that point with the overall score being 4-0. Seniors Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia) and Francisco Trinidad (Mexico City, Mexico) were winning their contests, one set to love, when all play was abandoned.
Illinois has gone through the Big Ten Conference undefeated for the last three seasons. The Fighting Illini have won three straight Big Ten regular season titles and are going for a fourth consecutive championship crown. They are currently ranked No. 8 in the nation.
