EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team had a spring break that it would just rather forget about. The Spartans lost to No. 9 Southern Methodist 7-0 on March 8 to finish with a record of 0-5 over the break. MSU had earlier competed in the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championship, in Corpus Christi, Texas, finishing 0-4. The loss to SMU dropped the Spartans' overall record to 5-11.
Michigan State failed to pick up a single victory as SMU also swept through the doubles competition. Seniors Ken Kigongo (Bradenton, Fla.) and Ivica Primorac (Mostar, Bosnia) lost to the No. 13 doubles team in the nation of Toby Hansson and Jon Wallmark, 8-5. Primorac also took his singles match into the third set versus No. 86 Dustin Mauck at No. 2 singles. Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) also battled into the third set.
The Spartans continue their current road trip by traveling to compete against Minnesota on Saturday, March 18. It is the second time the two schools will have met this season, as the Golden Gophers defeated Michigan State 4-0 at the H.E.B. Collegiate Team Championship. It is the opening contest in the Big Ten Conference for MSU, as the earlier match did not count in conference standings.
