MSU Men's Tennis Delivers One-Two Punch

EAST LANSING, Mich. - On a day when Muhammed Ali made a guest appearance at the MSU men's basketball game, it was the Spartan men's tennis team that was delivering the knockout blows. Michigan State defeated Toledo, 7-0, and Eastern Michigan, 6-1, on Saturday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU raised its overall record to 3-2 with the victories.
Three Spartans, Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia), Robert Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) and Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.), went a perfect 2-0 in singles play. The Topalo brothers also teamed to pick up a victory at No. 3 doubles against Toledo. The Spartans' 7-0 win over the Rockets was the third straight 7-0 decision MSU had been involved in, defeating Dayton and losing to Notre Dame. It looked as if MSU might continue the streak in the evenings match, but the Eagles picked up the final point of the night at No. 5 singles.
Michigan State picked up the doubles point against Toledo by winning two of the three matches. They swept through singles play with only two matches going into the third set. MSU started off against Eastern Michigan in the same fashion by taking two of three doubles matches. All five Spartan singles victories came in straight sets.
Michigan State stays at home for its next action. The Spartans will host Ball State at 2:00 p.m. and Valparaiso at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12. Michigan State home meets are held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Mt. Hope Road.
