Day One of the ITA Regional Tournament Concludes.

Madison, Wisconsin - Freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomore Todd Townsend (East Lansing, Mich.) advanced to the second round of the ITA Region IV tournament only to loose in the third round. Simonton won his first match 6-2, 6-2, defeating Paul Jacobsen of Indiana and lost his second round match 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to Harsh Mankad of Minnesota. This was the first defeat the freshman has suffered in college play, bringing his record to 6-1. Meanwhile, Townsend put up a fight to defeat Mathew Kirst of Western Illinois 7-6(4), 7-5 and then loose to Eric Robertson of Minnesota 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3. Townsend's record is now 6-2 in singles play.
In other tennis action of the day Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) was defeated by Ian Arons of Indiana, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round at the no. 1 singles slot. Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was defeated by Chris Wettengel of Minnesota 0-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) at the no. 2 singles position in the first round. The duo's of Rodrigo Abucham (Sau Paulo, Brazil) and Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.)were defeated by Mayer/McKinley of Purdue 8-3 and Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) and Jimmy McGuire(Columbus, Ohio) were defeated by Westerman/Friedman of Wisconsin 8-2.
The tournament will continue through Monday October 30. The next action for the Michigan State Men's Tennis Team will be when they kick off their spring season on January 13, 2001 at the Big Ten Indoor Tournament in Ann Arbor. Their next home action is against Toledo and Wright State on January 20, 2001.
