The Spartans Battle Hard in Tournament

East Lansing, Mich - The 2000 Advantage Spartan Invitational has come to a close. Leaving two Spartans undefeated for the weekend in singles play. Freshman Eric Simonton defeated Alex Farron-Mahon of Toledo (UT). After winning the first set decisively (6-0) Simonton fell to 2-5 in the second to make another come back to defeat Farron-Mahon 7-6(3) in the second. Simonton remains undefeated on the season at 5-0. Meanwhile sophomore Todd Townsend decisively defeated Carlos Lomena of UT (6-2, 6-0) to go 3-0 in the tournament.
Sophomore Jimmy McGuire had another hard battle today. He was defeated by Dipesh Rao of UT. Playing at the no. 1 singles McGuire put up a hard fight. McGuire came off to a slow start loosing the first set 3-6. Then in the second he got some fire in him and went on the beat Rao by a score of 7-5 in the second set. He took this momentum into the third where he won the first 3 games. Then Rao came back to tie the score at 3 a piece. Then the fight continued until Rao broke McGuire to make the score 5-6. Rao then kept the momentum to defeat McGuire 7-5 in the 3rd set.
A local pair teamed up to win at no. 3 doubles. Townsend of East Lansing and sophomore Adam Hourani of Lansing defeated Hector Arroyo & Zach Barden of UT 8-6. Townsend and Hourani went 2-0 in doubles play this weekend.
The Spartans next action will be in Madison Wisconsin at the ITA Midwest Regionals next weekend (Oct. 27-30).
The Advantage Spartan Invitational Tournament was set up in a dual game format.
