Men's Tennis Splits Opening Dual Meets Of The Season

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The day started off on the wrong foot for the Spartans, but luckily the right foot took the next step Saturday night. Michigan State dropped its opening dual match of the season Saturday afternoon to Western Michigan 4-3, but regrouped for a 7-0 win over Dayton in the nightcap.
Michigan State, playing its first home dual meets of the year, looked much improved after some disappointing performances last weekend in the Big Ten Singles Championship. Ivica Primorac (Mosthar, Bosnia), Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.), and Todd Townsend (East Lansing, Mich.) all went 2-0 in singles play for MSU. Primorac also teamed with Robert Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.), while G. Topalo played with Mark Findling (Livonia, Mich.) to pick up doubles victories against Dayton.
Western Michigan won all three doubles contests against Michigan State to pick up one point and was victorious in three of the six singles matches to claim its 4-3 win over Michigan State. Townsend earned his first win as a Spartan at No. 6. Against Dayton it was all MSU. The Spartans swept all three doubles matches for the opening point and then swept singles action to record a 7-0 victory.
Michigan State takes to the road for its next action. The Spartans will travel to face Notre Dame at 3:30 p.m. on February 1 before heading back to East Lansing on February 5 to host Toledo and Eastern Michigan. Michigan State home meets are held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Mt. Hope Road.
