Women's Tennis at Old Dominion Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Michigan State women's tennis team finished the first of three days of competition at the Old Dominion Invitation on Oct. 23, in Norfolk, VA. Teams competing in the ODU invitational were American University, Richmond University, Virginia Commonwealth, Pittsburgh, UNC-Charlotte, George Mason, James Madison, Winthrop, Appalachian State, Howard, Syracuse, and MSU.
In the singles competition, senior Brooke West led MSU. West defeated GMU's Bobbi Lee, 6-1, 7-2, in the A-flight. MSU sophomore Natasha Skogerboe, who also competed in the A-flight, suffered her first defeat of the season in a very close match against WU's Juliana Marques, 7-5, 7-5. MSU's other victory came from senior Jamie Tannenbaum in the C-flight. After missing the Spartan Classic with a back ailment, Tannenbaum returned to the court, and defeated Kathryn Brown of ASU, 6-0, 6-3. Advancing due to a bye were junior Brooke Townsend (B-flight) and freshman Julie Gleason (C-flight).
The Spartans also played well in the double competition, where the tandem of Tannenbaum and Gleason won two matches in the C-flight. They defeated Howard's Landry and Jones in a first-round match, and then went on to defeat Pittsburgh's Carbon and Gardella, 8-0, in the semi-finals. The MSU combination of senior Isabell Oelze and West were 1-1 in the first day of A-flight competition. They defeated Kaiseo and Fox of ASU, 8-3, in the first round, before falling to Richmond's Williams and Woodworth, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. Also winning and losing a game was the Spartan tandem of Skogerboe and Townsend, who defeated ODU's Beli and Araujo, in a first round match up. The pair fell to HU's Alarni and Austin, 8-2, in the second round of competition.
MSU return to competition for the remainder of the ODU Invitational, from Oct. 24-25.
