Detroit, Mich. - The Michigan State women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to overcome a poor team performance en route to a 74-52 win over Detroit tonight at Calihan Hall. With the win, the Spartans improve to 3-0, while the Titans fall to 2-1 on the season.
?It was a struggle tonight,? MSU coach Karen Langeland said. ?We didn't play at the level that we are capable of playing.?
Junior Becky Cummings scored nine of her game-high 16 points in the first half to help the Spartans to a 39-26 lead at halftime. A baseline jumper by Molly Peterman cut MSU's lead to 53-43 with 11:14 left in the game, but that's as close as the Titans would get.
?Our free throw shooting has to improve and we have to cut down on our turnovers,? Langeland said of the Spartans' 60 percent effort from the line and their 22 miscues. ?The only good thing that came out of tonight was a win.?
Cummings added a game-high 13 rebounds to her 16-point effort for her first double-double of the year. Senior Maxann Reese was the only other player in double figures with 11 points. Freshman Maria Recker and sophomore Abby Salscheider came off the bench to add seven points each.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Nov. 27 when they host Southern Illinois at 7 p.m., at the Breslin Center.
