Volleyball Loses In Five To Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State volleyball team fell in five (15-17, 15-3, 7-15, 15-4, 11-15) to Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, on Friday, Nov. 12. The Spartans, who had won three matches in a row and seven of eight coming into this match, fall to 18-9 overall, 8-7 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State outhit (.220-.171), outdug (75-63) and outblocked (16-10) the Spartans in the win. Sarah Gustin led four Spartans in double figure kills with 19 and added 13 digs. Angela Morley tallied double figure kills for the second time in her career with 12 and added six blocks. Jessica Sanborn had 12 kills, 14 digs and four blocks in the losing effort.
Gustin carried the team in game one with eight kills and six digs. The game was tied nine times before MSU self-destructed with two errors and OSU won, 17-15.
Game two was more of the same with the lead see-sawing. Ohio State got off to a fast start at 4-1 but MSU slowly worked itself back into the game. With the Buckeyes up 13-10, Erin Hartley and Sanborn had timely kills, combined with an OSU hitting error to tie the score at 13-13. The Bucks then recorded two straight errors to give MSU the game, 15-13. Ohio State outhit MSU .196-.167 and outblocked the Sartans 3-1.
Michigan State jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third game. Ohio State countered with 10 straight points to take an insurmountable 11-4 advantage and went on to win 15-7. The Buckeyes hit .433 to MSU?s .190 and outdug the Spartans 18-10.
Maren Witzel and Morley each tallied four kills while Sanborn had three blocks as the Spartans outplayed OSU 15-4 in game four to tie the match. MSU hit .374 to OSU?s .103 and outblocked the Buckeyes 4-0.
The fifth and final game was tied at one, two and three before three consecutive MSU hitting errors gave the Buckeyes enough of a lead in rally scoring to ride to a 15-11 win.
Michigan State returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 13 in State College, Pa., against No. 1 Penn State.
