BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Michigan State used record-setting blocking and accurate hitting to defeat Indiana, 3-0, on Saturday, Oct. 23 in Bloomington. MSU?s 15-11, 9-15, 15-11, 15-6 win was its fourth-straight. It was also a record-setter as four school records were either broken or tied.
Redshirt freshman middle Angela Morley set the school single-match record with 14 total blocks and tied the single-match record with 13 block assists. Junior outside hitter Sarah Gustin added a season-high 11 block assists to help MSU set the school single-match record for team block assists with 40. The Spartans combined the 40 assists with four block solos to tie the school record for team blocks in a match with 24.
Gustin led the team with 22 kills on .375 hitting and recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Junior middle Jessica Sanborn added 18 kills, 11 digs and a season-high eight blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Erin Hartley tallied 13 kils, nine digs and six blocks. Setter Vicki Basil played another solid match, recording 63 assists, 12 digs and three blocks.
Up 8-2 in game one, MSU saw its lead dwindle as Indiana came back to tie the score at 10-10. The Spartans then won four points to take a 14-10 lead but had to serve for game point six times before closing it out, 15-11.
The teams played to a virtual draw in game two, tying the score at three, five, seven, eight and nine. Michigan State then fell apart and Indiana scored six straight points to tie the match at 1-1 with a 15-9 victory.
MSU came back in the third game, jumping out to a quick 8-1 lead. The Spartans couldn?t quite finish off the Hoosiers, though, and Indiana fought back to within two at 13-11. A Gustin block solo brought the Spartans to game point and an IU hitting error finished it off at 15-11.
The Spartans slipped to 0-2 in game four before finding themselves and ripping off three points to take back the lead. Indiana never got loser as State went on to finish the match with a 15-6 win.
MSU recorded 40 team blocks over the weekend and currently has 238.5 blocks on the season - already eighth best in a single season in school history - with 12 matches left to play. Morley recorded her 100th career block against Indiana and currently has 111.
Michigan State is now 15-7 overall, 5-5 in the Big Ten. Indiana falls to 13-6 overall, 4-6 in conference play. The Spartans return to action on Friday, Oct. 29 at Minnesota at 7 p.m. CT.
