EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State men?s soccer team (6-4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes (8-4, 2-1), 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Old College Field on the MSU campus.
Sophomore Brett Konley (Plymouth, Mich.) scored two goals for the Spartans, both coming in the second half. Konley headed in a pass from junior Rick Smith (Tecumseh, Mich.) at the 68:46 mark, and provided an insurance goal on a kick from about 30 yards out with only seven seconds remaining in the game. Konley improves his team-leading point total to 10, with four goals and two assists.
Junior goalie Tim Lieckfelt (Sterling Heights, Mich.) recorded five saves for the Spartans, en route to his third complete shutout of the season. The shutout was Lieckfelt?s second of the week after holding No. 21 Oakland scoreless on Wednesday.
?This was a great team defensive effort,? said Lieckfelt. ?Every shutout brings more confidence, and you can just feel the confidence level rising with this team.?
MSU Head Coach Joe Baum agreed with Lieckfelt after the game.
?This was a very tough, physical, defensive college soccer game,? Baum said. ?It wasn?t pretty, but we did the things we needed to do to win the game. Tim (Lieckfelt) played an excellent game and was definitely the star of the match.
?The guys were a little tired after the Oakland game, and I think that showed in the first half,? he added. ?But we picked it up in the second half, and I thought the big crowd really energized us and helped the team come through with the win.?
Michigan State returns to action Wednesday, October 13, to face the Detroit Titans. The game begins at 4:00 p.m. in Detroit.
