EAST LANSING, MICH. - The Michigan State men?s soccer team (7-4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) defeated the Detroit Titans (5-10), 4-3, in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in Detroit. The sudden-death win marks the second time MSU has won in overtime this season.
Junior John Benoist (St. Louis) scored his second goal of the game in overtime with only one minute and six seconds left in the match. Junior Mike Trivelloni (Mt. Clemens, Mich.) assisted on the game-winning goal, his second on the day.
The Spartans put the game into overtime by overcoming a 2-0 deficit in the second half. Benoist scored the first goal of the game for MSU at the 65:08 mark on the team?s first penalty kick of the season. Five minutes after Trivelloni?s score, sophomore Steve Williford (Livonia, Mich.) put the Spartans on top, 3-2, on assists by sophomore Shervin Motaghi (East Lansing, Mich.) and Trivelloni. A Titan goal off a penalty kick less than one minute after Williford?s goal sent the game into overtime.
