Oliver Wolcott on Malec: 'Has an astute knowledge of the game... bulldog-type mentality... leads by example, gets the job done as a starter or reliever... reliable and versatile.'
Scouting Malec: Very effective lefty... has a great change-up over the top, also throws underneath... throws a submarine-type style from the left- hand side.
2005: Compiled a 4-5 record with a 6.14 ERA, appearing in 18 games, starting in nine... four wins tied him for second most on team... allowed only one hit in 5.0 innings in season opener against Centenary (2/26)... struck out four in 5.2 innings vs. Campbell (3/8)... pitched a career-high 8.0 innings at Bradley (3/19), also setting career-high and a team season-best eight strikeouts... earned the win, throwing 1.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit vs. Illinois (4/10)... threw 6.0 innings, fanning four at Ohio State (4/16).
Pre-MSU: Transferred from the College of Lake County where he lettered for two seasons... compiled a 10-0 record with a 2.00 ERA as a sophomore... struck out 81 batters in 72 innings to help lead CLC to a Skyway Conference championship in 2004... won Skyway Conference MVP honors in both freshman and sophomore years, earning the distinction of becoming the first player to win the award twice and becoming the first freshman to win the honor... earned first-team NJCAA Division II All-America honors and was named the Illinois Junior College Player of the Year in 2004... garnered Academic All-Skyway Conference honors in his sophomore year... also started at first base and left field during his two seasons at CLC.
High School: Was voted team MVP in his junior and senior seasons at Antioch (Ill.) High School... posted a 10-1 mark as a senior with a 0.82 ERA and 106 strikeouts... threw a no-hitter against Wauconda in junior year... finished high school career with a 32-5 record and 324 strikeouts in 244 innings pitched to rank among the state[apos]s all-time leaders in all categories... three-year letterwinner... three-time all-conference and all-area honoree... served as team captain in junior and senior seasons... also played first base and left field for the Sequoits... holds school career records for wins and strikeouts.
