What you need to know about Michigan State women's soccer

• No.5/7 Michigan State concludes the opening weekend of Big Ten play at No. 16 UCLA on Sunday. UCLA is currently 4-2-1 this season and opened Big Ten play with a 2-1 victory over Purdue on Thursday. The Bruins will be the third ranked opponent for MSU this season, and two others were receiving votes at the time of the game.

• These teams met twice in 2025, which was also the first-ever games between these schools in the sport of women's soccer. In the first, Michigan State and No. 4 UCLA played to a 1-1 draw in East Lansing; the second was in the Big Ten semifinals, where the Spartans earned an OT victory behind a brace from Emerson Sargeant.

• MSU opened Big Ten play on Thursday with a commanding win on the road at USC, 5-0. Kennedy Bell scored twice, Kayla Briggs had a goal and two assists, and Bella Najera posted an assist on each of Bell's scores. Renee Watson and Shelby Vaughn each delivered second-half scores, and Bella Schopp posted her second clean sheet of the season with two saves.

• Spartan mentor Jeff Hosler owns a 36-7-10 record in Big Ten games. In his first season, the Spartans went 5-4-1 in conference play, and are 31-3-9 since. He is 75-20-22 at MSU, and 308-87-40 in his 21-year head coaching career.

• The Spartans completed non-conference play with a 3-0-1 mark against teams in the Top 25 or receiving votes in the national polls at the time of the game. Michigan State can lay claim to the most and best non-conference wins of any team in the nation. Unbeaten in the pre-B1G schedule, MSU is undefeated in non-conference games for the second time in three years and for the third time under Hosler.

• Bell, the reigning Big Ten Forward of the Year, had her second brace of the season at USC, and the third in her career overall. Bell is currently tied for second in the B1G in points (13) and goals (5), and fifth in assists (3). With a 16-10-42 scoring line in 32 games as a Spartan, Bell is three points away from moving into the all-time top 25 in program history, and two goals away from joining MSU's all-time top 20.

• Briggs scored in her second straight game and also had a pair of assists against USC, pushing her to 11 points on the year (4-3-11). She has the game-winner in three of MSU's five wins this year to lead the Big Ten and tie for the national lead.

• Najera set up both of Bell's goals at USC, and now has 68 career points, which is 11th among MSU's all-time leading scorers. She is 11th in career goals (26) and 16th all-time in assists.

• Emerson Sargeant ranks third on the team in both points (6) and goals (2). Her career scoring line of 14-18-46 puts her tied for 24th all-time at MSU in points and 12th all-time in assists.

• Keeper Bella Schopp has started each of the last four games for MSU, going 2-0-2 and posting two shutouts. She made two saves on Thursday at USC and improved her stat line to a .667 save percentage and 1.00 GAA.
