Spartans’ B1G Tournament Run Comes To Close Friday With Loss To No. 4 Seed Trojans
5/22/2026 8:35:00 PM | Baseball
MSU downed by nationally-ranked No. 25 USC
After the game started at 9 a.m. CT / 10 a.m. ET, there was a 1-hour, 42-minute weather delay in the middle of the fourth inning, starting at 10:28 a.m. local time, with the game resuming at 12:10 p.m.
The Trojans, who are nationally-ranked No. 25, got on the board in their first at bat, plating a pair of runs in the bottom half of the opening stanza. USC added two more in the third inning to extend its lead to 4-0, which remained the score at the weather delay. When play resumed, the Trojans plated three runs in the fifth to stretch their advantage to 7-0, which stayed the score until the end of the game, ending the Spartans' tournament run and their season.
"It was a tough day today for our guys, but I'm really proud of the effort all year long, today included," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "I think we had a great experience out here in Omaha. The tough thing is we don't get to play together tomorrow, but I think our guys came out here with the idea that they were going to pull it loose and free and easy, and they did that, and we had two good wins to show from that. And so, I think when good kids play hard and do the right things and they can see the results of all that hard work, I think that's what's most important. We saw those results the last two days, and we just ran into a very good USC team today that has a chance to beat anybody in the country. But overall, I'm just really proud of our guy's effort."
Michigan State finishes the 2026 season with a 24-32 overall record after winning two games at B1G Tournament for first time since 2016, and the sixth time in MSU's 10 B1G Tournament appearances under Coach Boss. Overall, it was the eighth time winning at least two games in the Spartans' 17 total B1G Tournament appearances.
MSU made history as the first No. 12 seed to win not just one but two games in the B1G Tournament, upsetting No. 5 seed Purdue, 8-4, in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday, then knocking off No. 8 seed Iowa, 4-3, to reach the tourney quarterfinals.
The Spartans drew the fourth-seeded Trojans, who were part of the top four seeds that drew a bye to Friday's elimination round. With the win, USC advances to the semifinals against the winner of top-seeded UCLA and No. 5 seed Purdue, that was scheduled for 2 p.m. CT start, but was delayed until Friday night due to inclement weather.
Friday was the first-ever meeting at the Big Ten Tournament, as USC is in its second season in the league. It was also the second-ever meeting on the diamond between the Spartans and Trojans, who faced each other last season in a three-game B1G weekend series, with MSU winning two of three.
Senior outfielder Nick Williams knocked a double in the third inning to extend his hit streak to 16 games, the longest of the season by a Spartan this season and longest by an MSU player since teammate Ryan McKay also had a 16-game streak in 2024. Williams finished the day 2-for-4.

Joining Williams with two hits was junior outfielder Parker Picot going 2-for-3, while graduate senior catcher Noah Bright was 1-for-3, and McKay was 1-for-4.
On the mound, graduate senior JD Greeley started and went 1.0 IP, then redshirt-freshman Brady Chambers fired a season-high five Ks in 2.0 IP. Junior Ben Kochany (1.2 IP, 0 K), senior Tommy Szczepanski (1.0 IP, 2 K), senior Andrew Siler (0.1 IP, 1 K), junior Logan Pikur (1.0 IP, 1 K) and senior Nolan Higgins (1.0 IP, 1 K), finished it out.
The Trojans charged out of the gates with a two-run first frame on Friday, and the Spartan bats were stymied by USC starting pitcher Mason Edwards, the unanimous Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, who went 4.0 IP with two hits and struck out six Spartans.
MSU baseball says farewell to its 11 seniors, including one student manager, two members of the social media squad and eight players. The Spartan baseball seniors of players Noah Bright, JD Greeley, Nolan Higgins, Carter Monke, Randy Seymour, Andrew Siler, Tommy Szczepanski and Nick Williams, along with student manager Frankie Lollo, social media squad members Sedona Bassler and Becca Gawenda, along with all had their final game as Spartans on Friday.
"Yeah, they're all really good kids. I mean, they're guys that have been here five years, four years, three years, two years, and even just one," Boss said. "With the five-year guys, we've watched them grow. We've watched them continue to improve and get better and be leaders on our team. And same thing with the four-year guys, and the three-year guys came in and assumed a leadership role this year. And then even the guys that have only been here for just one year as graduate transfers. I mean, they came in and assimilated really quickly and meshed with the rest of the team in the clubhouse so well.
"It's just a really impressive group of young men, who I know are going to be outstanding contributors to society. They're going to be great husbands and great fathers. And we're proud to call them Spartan alums. They've made our program better and I appreciate that."
