Seymour’s Three HR Lead Spartans To 19-8 Rout Of Chippewas Tuesday

Spartan infielder blasts three HR as MSU plates most runs since 2024.
The Spartans' 19 runs was the most they've hung on a scoreboard since 2024, matching 19 runs from a 19-6 7-inning run-rule Victory for MSU at Georgia on Feb. 28, 2024. MSU scored nine runs in the final three innings, pulling away from a 10-8 score after six innings, in which the Spartans trailed the Chippewas, 7-5, after three innings.
Seymour's first multi-home run game came in a big way, belting three home runs, all in the left center field area, coming in the third inning with a solo shot, followed by a three-run homer in the fourth and capped the hat trick of home runs with a two-run blast in the sixth.
Seymour is the first Spartan with three home runs in the same game since Brandon Hughes belted three homers at Illinois on March 26, 2017.
"I was just slowing everything down. Nothing too crazy," Seymour said about what allowed him to see the ball so well in Tuesday's game. "I've been struggling a little bit this past couple weekends, so today I was slowing everything down and kind of just going back to my training with Coach Gelly (MSU assistant coach/hitting coach Taylor Grzelakowski). I wasn't trying to think too much on the second one, I just assumed I was going to get a fastball, but I ended up getting one, and luckily, I put a good swing on it."
For the game, Seymour ended 3-for-7 with six RBI, marking the Spartans' first six-ribbie outing of the season, and the first six RBI game since teammate Parker Picot had six RBI last season on May 10, 2025 at No. 25 USC in MSU's 15-5, 8-inning run-rule win. Seymour's six RBI is the second-most by a Spartan this season, behind Picot's eight ribbies in game two of the season on Feb. 14, 2026 in MSU's 13-4 upset at No. 8 Louisville.
Seymour's three HR add to his team lead, now with 10 on the season. For perspective of Seymour's outburst of an outing on Tuesday, he didn't have any HR as a freshman in 2023, then had three in all of 2024 in 54 games, then knocked four in 2025 in 58 games, and now has 10 HR this season in 23 games so far.
"Randy had a really good approach today I thought, and that's what he's capable of," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "He got the barrel to the ball, and did some damage, so he's got all kinds of power, he leads our team in home runs and it was just kind of one of those days for him. So when it's going good like that, you take a step away and don't say anything to him, and just let him go."
The Spartans scored in eight of the nine innings, only being held off the scoreboard in one inning, without a run in the sixth stanza. MSU scored in an alternating fashion in the first four frames with one run in the first, three in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth, while CMU scored four in the first and three in the second, and MSU had an 8-7 lead after four frames. After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, the only frame that had both zeroes in the top and bottom of the inning.
Tuesday's 19 runs topped the previous season-high that lasted all of two games, after MSU's 15 runs in a 15-5 8-inning run rule over Iowa in game one of Saturday's DH, which came on the heels of a four-game span in which the Spartans scored a combined 17 runs in those four previous games.
"Baseball is a funny game. You can score a bunch of runs one day and get shutout the next. And so, you take it each day-by-day, and enjoy the good and keep feeling good, and you just try to simplify things," Boss said. "I think when you start to struggle, you start to think a little bit too much, and it can spiral on you. So just take the good, enjoy it and ride it out as long as you can."
MSU's 19 runs came on a season-high 19 hits, as the Spartans improved to 8-15 overall, winning three of their last four. CMU is 8-12 with the loss, snapping a two-game win streak overall.
Tuesday's win also came in MSU's first visit to Mount Pleasant since 2019 and snapped the Spartans' two-game losing streak in the seres, losing in East Lansing, 6-5, a year ago. It was Michigan State's first win in Mount Pleasant since 2017, snapping a two-game losing streak there.
The Spartans' 19 runs was the most runs scored in the MSU-CMU series since 2009, when Michigan State won, 20-3, while the combined 27 runs scored was the most since a 17-13 CMU win in 2006.
Michigan State's 19 hits were not only a season-high, but the Spartans' most since another road game at an in-state foe, coming on March 26, 2024 in rapping out 19 hits in a 16-6 Victory for MSU at Michigan.
"It's just trusting our training. We were struggling for a while there with the hitting, and it's trusting in where we're going and just knowing that Coach Gelly has got us in the right spot," Seymour said.
A total of 11 different Spartans registered at least one hit, including all nine in the starting batting order, as Seymour shared top honors of three hits with sophomore infielder Dayton Murphy going 3-for-6 with four RBI, matched by sophomore outfielder Khamaree Thomas with four RBI on a 2-for-4 outing. Fellow sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a run driven in.
The freshman duo of designated hitter Isaiah Domey and infielder CJ Deckinga were both 2-for-4, with Deckinga scoring two runs, while Domey added one run. Junior infielder Trent Rice was 1-for-3 with three runs scored and one driven in, junior infielder Ryan McKay was 1-for-5 with a run scored and senior catcher Noah Bright was 1-for-3 with a run scored, to round out the starting nine all with hits.
Picot pinch hit in the eighth and plastered a two-run home run to left, finishing 1-for-2 with two ribbies and two runs scored.
Freshman Anthony Elezaj came on as a pinch hitter in the ninth and smacked an opposite-field double for his first collegiate hit and first collegiate RBI, driving in McKay, who led off the ninth with a single, coming off CMU reliever and former MSU teammate Gavin Moczydlowsky, one of eight Chippewa pitchers used.
The Spartans used seven, with graduate JD Greeley starting and going 1.0 IP with four runs on one hit. Freshman reliever Bobby Crane went 1.2 IP with three runs on four hits with two Ks and no walks. Redshirt-freshman Brady Chambers came on and quieted the CMU bats and offense, going 1.1 IP with only one hit and one K, but no runs or walks, and earned the, his second of the season.
Junior Gannon Grundman (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K), senior Nolan Higgins (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K), junior Ben Kochany (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K) and freshman Andrew Everson (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K) finished out the outing on a mound.
The Spartans got on the board in the first without a hit, as Rice and Thomas led off with back-to-back walks, moving up a base on a Murphy groundout, and Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly by Sturgess for an early 1-0 lead.
CMU countered with four runs in its first AB, with Cole Prout providing the big blow with a three-run HR, as the Chips took a 4-1 lead.
MSU quickly tied it up with three runs in the second, as Thomas came to bat with the bases full of Spartans, and cleared them with a three-run double to left.
After CMU went scoreless in the second, Michigan State added a run in the third on Seymour's solo home run. The Chips regained the lead with a three-run third inning, stringing together four hits and taking a 7-5 lead.
MSU regained the lead nearly just as fast as they lost it, with three runs in the top of the fourth on Seymour's three-run homer to take an 8-7 lead. After a scoreless fifth frame, the only such inning of the who game, the Spartans plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on Seymour's two-run homer. CMU got a run back in the home half of the sixth, on one hit and taking advantage of MSU's only two errors in the game, to close to 8-7.
That would be the closest the home team Chips would get, as MSU scored two runs in the seventh on a two-run single by Murphy. In the eighth, Picot pelted his two-run home run. Freshman infielder/pinch-hitter Cole Van Ameyde then drew a walk and later came in to score on a sac fly by Murphy to make it 15-8.
McKay led off the ninth, then Elezaj drove in his cousin with a double to right for MSU's first run of the ninth, setting a new season-high run total, topping the previous mark that stood for just two games, coming on Saturday, March 21 in game one of the DH with Iowa, 15-5, in 8-innings. After Picot struck out, but reached base on a passed ball on the play, Rice flew out to center for a sac fly to drive in Elezaj. Thomas later knocked an RBI groundout to plate Picot, and Murphy singled to left to drive in Van Ameyds and cap the Spartans' scoring.
Everson worked a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, to seal the Victory for MSU.
Tuesday's contest was number five out of the Spartans' 10-straight games in the state of Michigan, as Michigan State now returns home to host Purdue in a three-game B1G weekend series, Friday-Sunday, March 27-29. Friday's series opener between the Spartans and Boilermakers is slated for a 3:32 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's game two of the series is also a 3:32 start time, before Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1:02 p.m. first pitch.
