This Week In Spartan Athletics – March 17
Here's a look at the week ahead (March 17-23) for Michigan State Athletics:
Men's Basketball
No. 3-seed Michigan State is appearing in its 28th straight NCAA Tournament, tying the official record for the longest streak in men's tournament history. Coach Tom Izzo is the only coach in men's tournament history to guide his team to 28 straight tournaments. MSU opens the tournament against No. 14-seed North Dakota State in Buffalo at 4:05 p.m. (TNT) on Tuesday.
Women's Basketball
No. 5-seed Michigan State has earned its highest seed in the NCAA Tournament since 2016. The Spartans open Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (ESPNEWS) with a first-round matchup against No. 12 Colorado State in Norman, Oklahoma.
Gymnastics
No. 11 Michigan State opens postseason competition Saturday at the 2026 Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships hosted by Illinois in Champaign. The Spartans ended the regular season on a high note as Nikki Smith recorded a perfect 10.000 on the floor exercise Sunday.
Hockey
No. 3 Michigan State will learn its NCAA Tournament seeding when the Men's Ice Hockey Championship bracket is announced on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Baseball
Michigan State opens the week with a non-conference game against Michigan on Wednesday in Ann Arbor. This weekend, the Spartans are at Jeff Ishbia Field at McLane Stadium for the first home games of the season when they host Iowa for a three-game Big Ten series. First pitch for Friday's home opener is at 3:32, as is Saturday's contest. Sunday's game is scheduled to start at 1:02 p.m.
Softball
Michigan State hosts No. 10 Nebraska in its first home series of the season this weekend. Friday's home opener is at 5 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and a noon first pitch on Sunday.
Women's Golf
Michigan State wraps up play at the Briar's Creek Invitational on Tuesday. The tournament is being played at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek on John's Island, South Carolina.
Wrestling
Michigan State wrestling has two athletes who qualified for the NCAA Championships this week in Cleveland. Redshirt sophomore 149-pounder Clayton Jones and redshirt junior 197-pounder Kael Wisler will each be making their first NCAA Championships appearance. The action begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.
Track & Field
One week after the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, the outdoor season begins as the Spartans will compete at the USF Alumni Classic in Tampa, Florida. The meet runs Friday and Saturday.
Men's Tennis
Sunday, Michigan State defeated No. 1 Ohio State, handing the Buckeyes their first Big Ten home loss since 2003. This weekend, the No. 35 Spartans are back on the road, competing at No. 55 Northwestern on Friday and Sunday at No. 10 Illinois.
Women's Tennis
No. 65 Michigan State is in action at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center for the second straight weekend, taking on a pair of conference opponents from California. Saturday, the Spartans host No. 8 USC at 12 p.m., followed by a Sunday noon match-up with No. 10 UCLA.
