Junior outfielder becomes first Spartan with eight RBI since 2000 on grand slam, 3-run HR and sac fly; MSU registers highest-ranked series win under Coach Boss.
A day after clipping the Cardinals, 4-3, on Friday for MSU's second Top-10 win in as many seasons, the Spartans blasted Louisville on Saturday, belting three home runs on the day as part of 14 hits to the 13 runs. MSU wins the series with the 8th-ranked Cardinals, for the Spartans' highest-ranked series win in Coach Boss' 18 seasons at the helm.
Junior outfielder Picot knocked in a sacrifice fly in the first inning, then blasted a grand slam in the fourth and added a three-run homer in the sixth for eight RBI on the day, becoming the first Spartan with eight RBI in a game since Bob Malek had eight ribbies on April 19, 2000 vs. Detroit Mercy.Â
Picot's collection of eight RBI on Saturday was identical to Malek's 26 years ago, just in a different order with a three-run HR in the first inning, then a sac fly in the fifth before a grand slam in the sixth in the Spartans' 19-6 win over Detroit Mercy.
"I'm just really, really proud of all of our guys today," Boss said. "I think coming into today, I was a little concerned with the approach after yesterday, because it was a big win and the first win of the year, and I was a little bit worried with how they would come out today, but guys were locked in all day long. I thought our older guys did a great job of making sure that everybody was locked in and ready to go, and I think that's important for guys to be locked in and not taking anything for granted. I'm just really pleased with the effort in how we jumped out in the first inning with two runs,. That's a really good ballclub over there and we knew they'd bounce back and they got their two back, but we stopped the rally and prevented it from going any further, and we were able to break it open with the grand slam in the fourth to give us momentum and another three-run homer in the sixth. I just couldn't ask more out of our guys."
Picot finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored, also drawing a walk. Eight of the nine Spartan batters had at least one hit on the day, and Picot was one of six Spartans with multiple hits. Batters 1-4 in the MSU lineup combined to go 8-for-16 with 12 RBI and scoring 10 runs. Leadoff hitter senior outfielder Nick Williams was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and adding one walk, while No. 2 hitter junior infielder Ryan McKay was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. No. 3 hitter senior infielder Randy Seymour was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, hitting his second HR in as many days, ahead of Picot.
Senior designated hitter Noah Bright and sophomore catcher Adam Broski were both 2-for-5, with Broski knocking a double for his second extra-base hit of the weekend after a solo homer on Friday for his first HR and first extra-base hit as a Spartan.
Junior infielder Jasen Oliver and sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess were both 1-for-4 in logging their first hits in the Green & White, as Oliver is a transfer and second-year Spartan Sturgess got his first hit after limited action a year ago.
On the mound, three Spartan pitchers all made smashing debuts, as graduate starting pitcher Carter Monke, who is in his first year at MSU after transferring from Illinois State, went 4.0 IP, scattering five hits and yielding two runs, while ringing up three strikeouts.
Redshirt-freshman reliever Brady Chambers earned his first collegiate win in his college debut after missing last season with an injury. The righty went 2.0 IP with one run and one punchout.
Two other transfers, junior reliever Ben Kochany and graduate reliever JD Greeley finished it out from there. Kochany went 1.2 IP with four hits and a run, while Greeley went 1.1 IP with two hits, no runs and one K.
"I thought Carter Monke did a nice job for us on the mound, and Brady Chambers made his first appearance as a collegiate player and I thought he threw really well too, and then two veteran transfers came in and threw solid as well. I'm just really proud of all of our guys today," Boss said.Â
The Spartans struck first in plating a pair of runs in their first at bat. Senior outfielder Nick Williams led off with a single to center and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior infielder Ryan McKay followed with towering double to the wall, that Williams had to hold up to make sure wasn't caught, and advanced to third. Senior infielder Randy Seymour followed with an RBI groundout to short, driving in Williams and moving McKay to third. Junior outfielder Parker Picot was up next and he smacked a deep fly to the left field wall that was caught, but deep enough for the sacrifice fly to plate McKay and give the Spartans an early 2-0 lead.
After Monke rang up his first strikeout as a Spartan, UofL quickly countered with a single, stolen base, walk and hit-by-pitch to load the bases, and a two-run single tied up the score at 2-apiece.
The score stayed knotted at two until the fourth frame, when the Spartans broke the game open. Junior infielder Jasen Oliver ignited the rally with a 1-out single to center for his first hit as a Spartan. Broski followed with a single, then sophomore outfielder Isaac Sturgess knocked a double down into the right field line corner for the first hit and RBI of his Spartan career. Oliver scored on the drive, but Broski was tagged out at the plate by his Cardinal counterpart. Williams followed with a walk, inducing a Louisville pitching change, bringing in reliever TJ Schlageter to replace starter Jake Bean.
McKay greeted Schlageter by drawing a walk, preceding a single by Seymour to drive in Sturgess. That brought Picot to the plate, and he belted his grand slam just inside the left field foul pole to clear the bases as MSU batted around, plating six runs in the frame to break the game open at 8-2.
After Louisville got a run back in the fifth to pull within 8-3, the Spartans tacked on four more runs. Sturgess sparked the rally by leading off with a HBP. Williams followed with a single and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. McKay singled to right to drive in Sturgess. After another Louisville pitching change, Jake Gregor took over on the mound for Schlageter and two batters later, Picot pelted an opposite-field home run to right center for his second round-tripper and eighth RBI of the day, boosting the Spartan advantage to 12-3.
UofL got a run back in the home half of the seventh to pull within 12-4, but the eight-run gap didn't last long.
Seymour smacked his second homer of the weekend with a one-out solo blast to right field in the top of the eighth to complete the scoring at 13-4, and the Spartan relievers kept the Cardinals at bay to secure the Victory for MSU and the series win.
The Spartans and Cardinals return to the diamond of Louisville's Jim Patterson Stadium for Sun-day's series finale scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
All three games of the series are airing on ACC Network Extra and are also streamed on Watch ESPN. Sunday's game will be a simulcast with the UofL radio broadcast.
MSU then heads to Austin, Texas for a three-game series at No. 3 Texas on Friday-Sunday, Feb. 20-22.
