No. 22 Spartans Fall to No. 13 Ducks

EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 22 Michigan State volleyball fell in a hard-fought top 25 battle in four sets against No. 13 Oregon (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) Friday night inside the Breslin Center.Â
MSU drops to 13-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten with the loss, while Oregon improves to 13-2 and 4-1.Â
Oregon hit .250 for the match and held MSU to .147 hitting. MSU outblocked the Ducks (12-7) and led in services aces (7-6), while Oregon led in total kills (59-41) and digs (61-44).Â
MSU was led in kills by senior outside hitter Alanna Bankston, who put up her 11th double-digit kill match of the season with 14. Senior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska posted eight kills and a team-high 13 digs. Senior libero Lia Schneider had 12 digs.Â
Redshirt sophomore setter Malayah Long led MSU in assists with 32 and provided a team-best three service aces. Junior middle blocker Carmen Waye had a team-high six total blocks, while senior middle blocker Zora Hardison added five.Â
With Long at the service line, MSU started the match on a 5-0 run with a pair of Long service aces, kill from Bankston and Waye solo block. Oregon used a 4-0 run to get within a point before using three-straight points to tie the set at 7-7. The Ducks took their first lead of the set at 10-9 before a Hardison kill and back-to-back Bankston kills helped MSU to a 3-0 run to retake the lead at 12-10. Oregon tied the set again at 12-12 and used a kill to take a one-point, 15-14 lead at the media timeout. MSU came out firing out of the timeout, using kills from Bankston and Hayley Ogden, a block from Waye and Ogden and a Duck attack error for a 4-0 run to force an Oregon timeout at 18-15. The Ducks tied the set again at 22-22 with back-to-back points to force MSU into a timeout of its own. Oregon scored the final three points of the set to take the first, 25-22.Â
A block from Staniszewska and Waye and back-to-back Staniszewska kills helped MSU take a 3-1 lead in the second before a kill from Hardison and Staniszewska and a Holdem service ace helped MSU to a 7-3 lead. Oregon cut the MSU advantage to three with back-to-back points at 12-9 and again at 14-11, but a block from Hardison and Long extended the MSU lead back to four at 15-11 at the media timeout. Oregon then used a 4-0 run to tie the set at 15-15 to force an MSU timeout. The teams traded points back-and-forth in the following points until MSU took a two-point lead with an Ogden kill and Duck attack error. MSU took a timeout after three-straight Oregon points gave the Ducks a one-point lead at 21-20. The Ducks got to set point at 24-21 before a kill from Bankston and block from Hardison and Bankston forced an Oregon timeout at 24-23. Oregon used a kill out of the timeout to take the second set, 25-23.Â
Oregon called timeout after MSU opened up an 11-5 lead in the third set. The Ducks cut the MSU lead to four at 13-9 and again at 14-11 before an Oregon error extended the MSU lead back to five at 15-10 at the media timeout. An Oregon error out of the timeout then gave the Spartans a 16-10 before back-to-back Duck kills cut the lead to four. MSU responded with three-straight points with a block from Staniszewska and Waye and two-straight Waye service aces to force an Oregon timeout at 19-12. A Staniszewska kill out of the timeout extended MSU's lead back to six before a 3-0 Oregon run forced MSU into a timeout of its own at 20-15. The Ducks used a 3-1 run out of the timeout to trim the MSU lead to three at 21-18 before cutting the lead to three again at 23-20. Oregon stopped MSU's first set point at 24-21 after a Bankston kill, but a Duck service error to follow helped the Spartans take the third set, 25-21.Â
The Ducks opened an 11-6 lead in the fourth to force an MSU timeout. The Spartans cut the Oregon lead to just one after kills from Hardison and Ogden, an Oregon service error and attack error and Bankston solo block for a 5-1 run at 13-12. An Oregon kill helped the Ducks take back a two-point lead at the media timeout at 15-13. MSU got back within one with three-straight points with an Oregon attack error, Waye solo block and Waye and Ogden block at 17-16 before Oregon used a 5-1 run to extend its lead to five at 22-17 and force an MSU timeout. MSU staved off a pair of Oregon match points, but the Ducks finished the set off with a kill to win the match, 25-20.Â
