Spartan Cross Country Travels to Gans Creek Classic

EAST LANSING, MICH. - Michigan State cross country returns to action at the Gans Creek Classic on Friday, Sept. 26.
The men's 8k race will begin at 9:15 a.m. ET with the women's 6k race starting at 10 a.m. ET. The Gans Creek course will be a preview of the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22. There are nine ranked teams among the field on the women's side, including No. 2 Oregon and No. 5 Stanford. Fourteen of the top 25 teams will be represented on the men's side, including No. 1 Iowa State and No. 4 BYU.
The Spartans will have 12 women running in the 6k Gold Race led by All-Americans Rachel Forsyth and Kate Stewart-Barnett. The women are currently ranked No. 16 in the latest USTFCCCA Poll and No. 2 in the in the Great Lakes Region.Â
The Michigan State men will also have 12 running in the 8k Gold Race. Riley Hough, who won the Spartan Invite on Sept. 12, will lead the MSU squad. MSU is ranked No. 27 in the most recent poll and No. 4 in the Great Lakes Region. Moses Osterink and Parker Lambers will also both be trying to break through for MSU.

Last time out, the MSU men won the Spartan Invite 8k race for the second-straight season with 28 points. The Spartan women finished second in the 6k race with 89 points, behind Northwestern with 18 points.
Individually, Hough won the men's race with a time of 23:41.1, just shy of his personal-best time of 23:04.4 set at the Big Ten Championships last season. Jack Pennewell, Moses Osterink and Thomas Westphal finished 5-6-7, respectively.Â
All-American Rachel Forsyth helped guide the Spartans to a second-place result, finishing seventh with a time of 20:31.1. Taylor Pangburn finished 13th with a time of 20:52.2.
Following the Gans Creek Classic, Michigan State will travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 17.
