EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State senior Ozan Baris has been named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the conference office, following his impressive performance at the Battle in the Bay to open fall action.
Baris, ranked No. 7 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, captured the B1G Player of the Week title for the fourth time in his career, and the first since last fall on Oct. 16, 2024. The Spartan senior has now earned the B1G Player of the Week accolade once in each of the last four seasons.
Opening his fall season, Baris rattled off four consecutive singles victories to place him in the tournament final. This victory run included an incredible win over Illinois freshman Adam Jilly, the No. 10 ranked newcomer in the nation. Trailing 3-5 in the third set, Baris managed an impressive comeback, winning 16 of the last 20 points of the match to claim the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
In just one weekend, Baris defeated several ranked opponents in straight sets, including an outstanding 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 89 Sasha Rozin (Arizona) and a 7-6, 6-4 win over No. 96 Dominique Rolland (UCSB).
Baris proved to be equally impressive in doubles play, alongside his partner Taym Alazmeh for back-to-back wins over Arizona State (8-5) and UC Santa Barbara (8-6).
Baris has shown consistency and competitiveness across both singles and doubles, setting the bar high for the season and will position him as one of the nation's top contenders heading into Big Ten competitions.
Up next, Baris and the Spartans will head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for ITA All-American Pre-Qualifiers.
