EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State volleyball completed a 2-0 weekend with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-18) victory over Chicago State Sunday afternoon inside the Breslin Center.Â
MSU moves to 2-0 overall with the win, while Chicago State drops to 0-2.Â
The Spartans hit .382 for the match to match the fourth-best team hitting percentage inside the Breslin Center set against Marist last season on Sept. 7. MSU led the Cougars in total kills (47-to-17) and held Chicago State to .068 hitting, while also leading in total blocks (6-5), service aces (10-2) and digs (40-23).Â
Outside hitter Taylah Holdem paced the Spartans with 17 kills, the most in a match for the junior since Nov. 8, 2023, and hit .560 on 25 attempts. She also finished just shy of a double-double with a team-high nine digs. Senior opposite Evie Doezema hit .250 and posted eight kills, while junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska added six kills on .385 hitting. Redshirt freshman Malayah Long and sophomore middle blockers Mia Hood and Breccan Scheck each added four kills. Long led MSU in assists with 34 and Scheck posted a team-high four blocks.Â
MSU's best hitting of the night came in the first set at .556 clip. A kill from Holdem and an attacking error from the Cougars put MSU up 2-1 early before a seven-point swing capped off by a service ace from Holdem gave the Spartans a 9-1 advantage. MSU went on another run to make it 13-2 before Chicago State went on a 4-0 run of their own, but the Spartans forced a Cougar timeout with a Staniszewska ace at 17-7. MSU allowed only four Chicago State points for the remainder of the set and put the first frame away, 25-11, with a Doezema kill.Â
After a 6-2 Spartan run to start the second set, the Cougars put together their own rally to tie the set at 6-6. MSU then rattled off four-straight points, capped off by a block from Staniszewska and Scheck, to make it a 10-6 lead for the Spartans. Chicago State got within two, 10-8, but a kill from Staniszewska and back-to-back kills from Holdem extended the Spartan advantage to five. The Cougars never got closer than seven points for the remainder of the frame as MSU ended the set, 25-16, with a kill from Holdem. Holdem posted eight of her 17 kills in the second set on .636 hitting.
