EUGENE, Ore. - In the final day of NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Kate Stewart-Barnett and Rachel Forsyth both captured All-American honors on Saturday night at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.Â
In a 3000m steeplechase race that saw seven athletes set new personal bests, Stewart-Barnett finished sixth with a school record and personal best time of 9:33.21. Alabama's Doris Lemingole won the title with a meet and collegiate record of 8:58.15. The reigning Big Ten Champion Stewart-Barnett battled to top her previous best of 9:36.96 set earlier this season.Â
"I thought Kate competed really well today and learned a lot about how to manage herself in a competitive field," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau said. "To finish sixth and break the school record is a mighty feat her for first time here. I believe she can grow a lot from here for her final year at MSU starting next year."
Stewart-Barnett broke Leah O'Connor's 10-year school record of 9:33.38 set in 2015. O'Connor set that record in Eugene in the finals of the 2015 NCAA Championships to finish third. Stewart-Barnett became the first MSU woman to earn All-American honors in the 3000m steeplechase since Karrigan Smith in 2019 and the first to earn first-team accolades since O'Connor.
In her first NCAA Outdoor Championship, Rachel Forsyth captured honorable mention All-American honors in the 5000m. She finished 18th with a time of 15:57.28 She became the first Spartan to earn All-American honors in the 5000m since Jenna Magness in 2021.
"Rachel Forsyth had an incredible freshman year. There are few true freshman with as many accolades as she's collected this year," Breznau said. "I know it's not the exact day we wanted, but I know she can learn and grow. Andy Nolan had a fantastic outdoor season. He knows how to fight and follow the plan. I have no doubt that he will be better a year from now."
