JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Michigan State track & field had two more athletes punch their tickets to the NCAA Championships on the final day of NCAA East First Round at Hodges Stadium on Saturday.
Kate Stewart-Barnett was the second Spartan to punch her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 3000m steeplechase. The reigning Big Ten Champion was in the lead pack the whole race. She finished second in the third heat and fourth overall with a time of 9:47.15.This will be Stewart-Barnett's first appearance in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She will be returning to Hayward Field where she won the Big Ten Championship in May, looking to become the first MSU woman to earn All-American honors in the 3000m steeplechase since Karrigan Smith in 2019.
Rachel Forsyth was the final Spartan to punch her ticket to Eugene. She ran an amazing race staying with the lead pack for most of the race. NC State's Grace Hartman won with a facility record time of 15:23.52. Forsyth finished sixth in her heat and ninth overall to qualify on time with a personal-best time of 15:30.50. The freshman will be competing in her first NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She is looking to become the first Spartan to earn All-American honors in the 5000m since Jenna Magness in 2021.
"Andy, Kate, and Rachel competed exceptionally well. They were savvy, confident and understood the goal. The group as a whole came out and supported one another," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Lisa Breznau said. "For some, this meet is a big stepping stone in their development and it takes a minute to learn how to compete here. It's incredibly humbling for everyone, including our qualifiers. Andy and Kate have stayed with it through adversity at this meet and trusted the plan for the day. Kate has been a great mentor for Rachel and helped her make this very big step. I cannot say enough great things about Andy. He started out as a walk-on and has been steady and trusted Coach (Aaron) Simoneau, and climbed the ladder throughout his career."
Valadian Pallett started the action with the discus. She reached her longest throw of 47.85m on her final attempt. Jayden Ulrich of Louisville finished first in the discus with a best throw of 64.81m.
"Our throws group had an impressive presence. They are a young group developmentally and are learning how to manage the year and attack at this meet," Breznau said. "Brady (Schultz) is in a similar boat in the high jump. As long as they all continue to learn and look to be competitive, they can grow a lot from here; it's an eye-opening meet."
Andrew Nolan will join Stewart-Barnett and Forsyth in Eugene competing in the 3000m steeplechase. He is trying to be the first Spartan man to capture All-American honors since current assistant coach Max Benoit in 2018.
The Spartans will return to historic Hayward Field the site of this year's Big Ten Championship. The NCAA Track & Field Championships will be held in Eugene June 11-14. The men will begin action on June 11.
"It's a sad week to say goodbye to goodbye to our seniors. Tyler Pritchett, Josh DeVries, and Val Pallett have provided a steady way for their teammates to emulate," Breznau added. "They are all high achieving in the classroom and on the track. I know they're next chapter will be exciting."
