
Three Spartans Earn Event Victories in Split-Squad Weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In the penultimate meet of the regular season, the Michigan State track & field team earned three event wins at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio and the Jim Green Invitational in Lexington, Kentucky.
Jesse Owens Classic
Weather hampered the schedule on Friday at the Jesse Owens Classic. Several lighting delays did not damper the Spartans performance in the 1,500m. Rachel Forsyth continued her hot streak of late winning with a personal-best time of 4:11.92. Her previous best was 4:16.01 at the Raleigh Relays on March 27. Forsyth's time was sixth-best in the Big Ten this season. Kate Stewart-Barnett was second with a time of 4:12.65.
After a lengthy weather delay, the first day of competition ended with the women's 5,000m. Olivia Millen used a huge PR to finish second with a time of 16:30.35. Her previous best was 16:38.30. Taylor Pangburn was fourth with a time of 16:46.12.
On Saturday, the Spartan women were back in action on the track. In the women's 800m, Shae Harbaugh finished fourth, crossing in 2:10.11.
In the final event for Michigan State, Sophia Lucki captures the victory in the 3,000m steeplechase. Lucki set a new PR with a time of 10:27.20. Her previous best was 10:31.17 at the Big Ten Championships last season.
Jim Green Invitational
In the Spartans' first event of the day on Friday, Michigan State captured second and third place. In the women's hammer, Elle Adrian finished second with a best throw of 57.07m, which she got on her sixth and final attempt. Val Pallett was third with a throw of 56.75m.
Trevin Phillips had a standout day for the Green and White in the men's javelin. He was second, collecting a new personal best of 63.89m. He reached his top throw on his sixth and final attempt. He was also the top collegiate athlete, as Ethan Shalaway competed unattached, winning with a throw of 65.13m.
In the men's hammer throw, Joshua DeVries was fifth with a throw of 62.92m, while Colby Morlock was ninth with a heave of 59.13m. Carter Bissell (7.18m) and Dylan Terryberry (6.79m) finished sixth and seventh, respectively in the men's long jump.
Sophia Mettes finished second in the women's pole vault (3.94m).
After a weather delay in Lexington, the Spartan men also had strong showing in the 1,500m Timothy Cherry finished third with a time of 3:43.30. Andrew Nolan had his second PR in as many meets after setting a new personal-best in the steeplechase on April 18. Nolan finished fourth (3:43.52), while Riley Hough was sixth (3:44.19). Jack Pennewell rounded out the Spartans in the top 10, as he crossed the line in 3:47.07 to finish eighth.Â
On Saturday, Michigan State started with an event win in the men's shot put. Colby Morlock earned the victory with a personal best throw of 18.81m, Â which he got on his second attempt. Dillon Morlock was third with a 17.25m.
In the women's discus, Pallet finished third (47.87m), while Jessica Stieb had a new PR, finishing fourth (45.06m). Rylan Finstrom was sixth with a throw of 44.15m.
On the track, the Spartans continued to find success. In the men's 100m, Cameron Cheetam finished third in 10.59, while Drew Novak was sixth in 10.70. Logan Allen was third in the 110m hurdles (14.41), while Noah Heiber was fourth (14.43).
Next week, Michigan State will conclude the regular season back in the Mitten State at the Len Paddock Invitational in Ann Arbor on May 9. The Big Ten Outdoor Championships will be in Eugene, Oregon for the first time May 16-18.
