MSU ties it up in third, before Oregon pulls away in middle innings.
MSU and Oregon will wrap up the three-game weekend series with the rubber match on Sunday, May 4 at 11:30 a.m. The Spartans downed the Ducks, 2-0, Friday night in the series opener, behind Spartan southpaw hurler Joseph Dzierwa's 11-strikeout, complete-game shutout.
With Saturday's result, MSU is now 24-20 overall and 10-13 in B1G action, while Oregon moves to 32-13 overall and 15-8 in conference competition. Saturday was MSU's first-ever loss to Oregon in the all-time series, as the Spartans still lead, 5-1.
Saturday afternoon's contest saw the visiting Ducks score four in the first, only to have the Spartans counter with two runs each in the second and third stanzas to tied it up at 4-4. However, Oregon added two runs in the fourth and fifth frames, adding single runs in the sixth and seventh to open 10-4 advantage. MSU plated a run in the home half of the seventh to close to 10-5, but Oregon added one in the eighth and two more in the ninth for the 13-5 final score.
Oregon rapped out 18 hits in the game, including four home runs, with two by the B1G and NCAA leader Mason Neville, now with 23 HR on the season. The Ducks committed three errors and left nine on base.
"I think everybody would've come out strong," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said about Oregon's hot start to the game. "I think if we got beat 2-0 last night, we would've come out strong. They're a very good, talented lineup. We're very aware of that. I don't know if it was anything they did or didn't do today, I think it was more about us executing or not executing. Certain spots of the game when you don't execute, you don't take advantage of it."
Michigan State had nine hits, including four for extra bases with two doubles by sophomore infielder Ryan McKay, a double from senior outfielder Nick Williams and a two-run triple by senior catcher Noah Bright. The Spartans made one error and left seven on base.
N.Williams finished 3-for-4 with a run score, while McKay and Bright were both 2-for-4, with Bright knocking the aforementioned two ribbies, while McKay touched home twice and also drew a walk. Senior infielder Sam Busch and junior infielder Randy Seymour were both 1-for-4 and both had an RBI, while Seymour scored a run. Senior outfielder JT Sokolove drew a walk and scored a run. Graduate designated hitter Caleb Berry knocked in one RBI.
Five different MSU pitchers scattered the 18 hits. Redshirt-sophomore starter Tate Farquhar went 3.0 IP, spraying seven hits for six runs, five earned, with three Ks and two walks. Graduate reliever George Viebrock III went 2.0 IP with three hits, two runs and one walk. Sophomore reliever Logan Pikur threw 3.0 IP with five hits, three runs and two Ks, junior Noah Matheny went 0.2 IP with three hits and two runs, with one walk and one punchout, while redshirt-junior Ryan Szczepaniak got the final out and put an end to the Ducks' rally the top of the ninth in his only batter faced.
"I think we missed a lot of spots," Boss said. "I think when you make mistakes, especially over the plate, they're going to get hit at this level. I think that's exactly what happened. I think we made a lot of mistakes out over the plate, in areas that you are going to get hurt when you throw it there. That's exactly what happens. That's a good hitting ballclub over there and they took advantage of it."
The Ducks scored four runs on four hits in the first frame to open a 4-0 lead.
N.Williams sparked the Spartan rally in the second with a one-out single to center. Two batters later, Sokolove drew a walk and Bright followed with a triple off the wall in left center, driving in N.Williams and Sokolove to cut the gap in half.
McKay led off the third with an opposite-field double down the left field line, and Seymour reached on an Oregon error on a sac bunt. Berry followed with an RBI groundout to plate McKay. Busch then laced a single down the left field line to score Seymour and tie it up at 4-all.
The Ducks put together three hits and took advantage of one Spartan error in the top of the fourth to re-take the lead at 6-4, before Viebrock ended the Oregon rally by inducing a flyout to leave the bases full of Ducks.
Oregon tacked on two more in the fifth on Neville's first two-run HR, then added a run in the sixth on a solo homer, and scored another run in the seventh for a 10-4 lead.
McKay knocked another double in the seventh, again going the other way, and Seymour followed with a single through the right side to drive McKay in and get MSU within, 10-5.
The Ducks added a run in the eighth on a solo HR, before Neville knocked his second two-run HR of the day in the ninth for the final scoring.
Oregon and Michigan State conclude the three-game series with the rubber match on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
