
No. 64 Spartan Women’s Tennis Drops Final-Regular Season Match in Ann Arbor

Women’s tennis falls to the highly-competitive No. 3 Michigan in Saturday matinee matchup.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 64 Michigan State women's tennis was topped by the No. 3 Michigan, 4-0, deficit during their final regular-season match.
The Spartans slide to a 5-8 Big Ten Conference record, and a 13-11 overall record.
Michigan advances to an undefeated 13-0 Big Ten Conference record and a 21-3 overall record, earning their third-straight Big Ten Regular Season Championship.
The Green & White knew it would be a difficult match with Michigan holding four ranked singles players and three ranked doubles pairs.
Doubles play kicked off in a commanding manner, with No. 27 ranked Lily Jones/Jessica Bernales topping the duo of freshman Ellie Blackford/senior Liisa Vehvilainen at No. 1 doubles in a 6-2 triumph.
Following closely was No. 69 ranked Julia Fliegner/Reese Miller who took on the Spartans' junior Issey Purser/redshirt-sophomore Hanna Tsitavets at No. 2 doubles, where the Spartans fell, 6-2.
With the doubles point clinched in Michigan's favor, the duo of freshman Amara Brahmbhatt/junior Matilde Morais did not finish their match.
Singles play was yet another daunting task for the Green & White, with all Wolverines on courts No. 1-4 being ranked within the top 100 by ITA.
None of the Spartans went down without a fight, all winning multiple games.
First to fall was Ellie Blackford at No. 2 singles, where she faced No. 34 Piper Charney, and was ultimately edged out 6-2, 6-2.
Following was Vehvilainen who took on No. 3 Julia Fliegner at No. 1 singles, where she put up a valiant effort against the talented Wolverine, but fell 6-0, 6-4.
Locking down the match in Michigan's favor was Reese Miller at No. 5 singles, where Hanna Tsitavets was overtaken 6-1, 6-3.
With Michigan clinching the match 4-0, the remaining singles matches went unfinished.
Women's tennis still battles for a spot in next week's Big Ten Tournament, set to take place in Ojai, Calif. with more tournament information to be announced throughout the weekend based on results across the conference.
