The No. 73-ranked Michigan State women’s tennis hosts two Big Ten opponents for a weekend of action.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – No. 73 Michigan State women's tennis hosts No. 44 Northwestern and No. 48 Illinois in a weekend full of Big Ten Conference action.
MSU's match against Northwestern is on Friday, March 28 at 5 p.m. and their match against Illinois kicks off an exciting Spartan men's and women's tennis doubleheader on Sunday, March 30 at 10 a.m.
Friday's match against Northwestern also serves as lone senior Liisa Vehvilainen's Senior Celebration presented by HAP.
These matches follow the Spartans' trip to the Pacific coast, where they faced No. 16 USC and No. 24 UCLA, and fell to both teams in hard-fought matches.
Overall, the Green & White have earned themselves a 10-7 record and a 2-4 Big Ten record within the spring dual action season.
Series History vs. Northwestern
The Spartans have struggled against the Wildcats, going 1-21 since the 2001-02 season.
The singular win came during the 2018-19 season, where the Spartans went 6-5 in Big Ten Conference action.
In the last match-up between these two teams during the 2022-23 season, the Green & White were able to slate one singles match point, but ultimately fell, 1-4.
This is not the first time that MSU and Northwestern meet this season, with the Wildcats attending both the Michigan State Class and Spartan Invite during the fall tournament season.
Scouting Northwestern
Northwestern currently holds a 10-8 overall record and a 3-3 Big Ten Conference record.
No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 49 Iowa and No. 20 Washington gave the Wildcats their three Big Ten losses, all within the month of March.
The Wildcats had a stacked schedule, facing difficult opponents such as No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Stanford and No. 15 Pepperdine, dropping all three of these matches.
While its schedule has been trialing, NU was able to slate various wins against fellow ranked opponents and gave strong performances on the courts.
Following their match against the Spartans, Northwestern travels to Ann Arbor to face No. 3 Michigan.
Series History vs. Illinois
Illinois is yet another tough opponent that the Spartans continuously face, holding a 4-20 record against the Fighting Illini.
The Spartans' last victory against the Fighting Illini came during the 2020-21 season, where the Green & White secured the doubles point and nabbed a narrow victory 4-3.
This was the second of two of two meetings the Illini and Spartans had that season, with MSU dropping their initial match in East Lansing, 2-4.
In their most recent match-up during the 2022-23 season, Illinois swept MSU, 4-0.
Scouting Illinois
Illinois holds an 8-9 overall record with a 3-3 Big Ten Conference record.
Similar to Northwestern, the Fighting Illini fell to No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 49 Iowa and No. 20 Washington.
In overall play, Illinois fell to some of the top ranked ITA teams, putting up valiant fights against No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 6 UCLA.
