MSU women’s tennis falls 0-4 in final Pacific Coast match against No. 24 UCLA.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Michigan State women's tennis faced yet another difficult Big Ten opponent in No. 24 UCLA on Sunday, and fell in a 4-0 final score in their second match on the west coast.
The Spartans are now 10-7 after a trialing weekend on the Pacific Coast, earning themselves a 2-4 Big Ten Conference record. UCLA moved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in B1G play.
The Bruins clinched the doubles point at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, with the duos of junior Issey Purser/redshirt-sophomore Hanna Tsitavets and junior Matilde Morais/redshirt-sophomore Oriana Parkins-Godwin being defeated on their respective courts.
Senior Liisa Vehvilainen and freshman Ellie Blackford's doubles match at No. 1 doubles went unfinished.
In singles play, the Green & White were resilient in their effort to come back from dropping the doubles point.
While UCLA was able to secure the match, winning at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, the performances on the courts were nothing short of tough and resolute.
Blackford battled back from losing her first set 3-6 at No. 2 singles, going 6-3 in her second set against No. 38 ranked Kate Fakih. While the match went unfinished, Blackford was able to force a third set against her highly ranked opponent.
Vehvilainen was under similar circumstances at No. 1 singles against No. 29 ranked Anne-Chirstine Lutkemeyer, dropping her first set, 5-7, but then rallying back 5-4 before the match concluded.
A final powerful performance was at No. 3 singles, where freshman Amara Brahmbhatt took on No. 78 Kimmi Hance.
In Brahmbhatt's match, the freshman took her first set at 7-5, and was en route to a potential victory during her second set.
While the Spartans were unable to nab a victory, the performances on the courts were nothing short of resilient and promising.
The Spartans return to East Lansing for a set of dual matches against Northwestern on Friday, Mar. 28 at 5 p.m. and Illinois on Sunday, Mar. 30 at 10 a.m.
During Friday's match against Northwestern, the Green & White will honor lone senior Liisa Vehvilainen in her Senior Celebration Presented by HAP.
All remaining home matches will take place at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center due to construction on the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
