No. 20 Michigan State Falls to Michigan, 71-61

Junior forward Grace VanSlooten earned her fourth double-double of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 20/20 Michigan State split the season series with Michigan after falling to the Wolverines, 71-61 on National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday afternoon at the Breslin Center. MSU won the meeting in Ann Arbor on Jan. 25, 88-58.
MSU had a season-high crowd of 11,043 packed into the Breslin Center, which was 18th-best in school history.
With the loss, Michigan State falls to 18-5 overall and 8-4 in league play. Michigan has now won three-straight games, improving to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in Big Ten action.
The Spartans had three players in double figures led by junior forward Grace VanSlooten who scored 15 points with 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Graduate guard/forward Julia Ayrault scored 10 points, adding six boards. For the second-straight game, graduate guard Nyla Hampton reached double figures off the bench, scoring 11 points with four steals.
Michigan was led by 19 points from Syla Swords.
The 61 points were the second-fewest scored by Michigan State this season after the 59 scored against Oregon at home on Jan. 30.
Graduate guard Jaddan Simmons started the game with the first seven points of the game for the Spartans. Both teams came out hot with the Spartans making six of their seven,while the Wolverines made four of five, heading into the first media timeout. A basket by Hampton at the 3:47 mark put Michigan State on top 14-11. MSU used a 6-0 run to take a 18-11 lead and was ahead after the first period 18-13.
Michigan scored the first five points of the second quarter to tie the game at 18-18. The Wolverines scored 15 of the first 18 points of the period to take a 28-21 advantage, leading to a Michigan State timeout. A Hampton trey snapped a 6-0 U-M run to make it a 32-24 deficit. The Spartans replied with a 7-0 run of their own to end the half down 32-28. In the meeting in Ann Arbor on Jan. 25, MSU also trailed by four at the break 33-29.
Michigan State re-took the lead after a 6-0 run 36-34 with under seven minutes left in the third period. The Spartans continued to struggle from the field, as the Wolverines took as big a lead as seven points, 49-42 after a pair of Lucy Olson free throws. MSU shot only 26.3 percent in the third period with Ayrault leading the way with eight points.
The Wolverines scored the first five of the fourth quarter to take a 10-point lead, 54-44 at the 8:19 mark. The Spartans couldn't get the deficit below seven. Michigan was solid from the free throw line in the final 10 minutes to seal the win, going 12-for-13 from the charity stripe.
The Spartans conclude the homestand against Wisconsin on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
Michigan State Women's Basketball Post-Game Notes
• The Spartans and Wolverines split the season series with both teams winning on the other's home court . . . it is the first series split since the 2021-22 season, when both home teams won . . . the visiting team sweep is the first-ever in the series that dates back to 1973.
• Sunday's attendance of 11,043 was the 18th-best in MSU women's basketball history, including the sixth-best when playing Michigan . . . it was the largest crowd since Feb. 23, 2020 vs. Michigan when 11,462 were in attendance.
• Over the last season-and-a-half, MSU has still won 23 of its last 27 home games at the Breslin Center, now 10-2 at home this season following logging a 13-2 ledger last season at home . . . overall, MSU has won 34 of its last 44 home games dating back to the 2022-23 season.
