Wrestling Opens Road Trip With Win Over Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Michigan State wrestling got back in the win column on Friday night, taking down Gardner-Webb by a final score of 23-11 at Paul Porter Arena to kick off its road trip to the Tar Heel State.
MSU improves to 2-1 on the season in dual action ahead of its weekend finale at The Citadel on Sunday, December 7. First whistle in Charleston, South Carolina is set for 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
Friday night's dual started at 197 pounds where redshirt junior Kael Wisler continued his strong start to the season with a 7-1 decision over Josh McCutchen. Redshirt sophomore heavyweight Max Vanadia secured the first bonus point victory of the night for Michigan State defeating Rocky Files by major decision, 14-3. Redshirt junior Nick Corday moved to 2-0 in duals this season with a 4-0 decision over Tyson Lane. In a bout that was 0-0 heading into the third, Corday turned Lane for three near-fall in the third period.
Gardner-Webb won bouts at 133 and 141 pounds to pull withing 10-8 of Michigan State heading into the second half of the dual.
The Spartans won three straight after the mid-way point as true freshman 149-pounder Evan Gosz picked up his first career dual win with a 11-3 major decision over Drew Pepin. Gosz earned a reversal and four near-fall in the first period to lead 6-3, before getting an escape and a takedown in the third to secure the riding time. Redshirt freshman Darius Marines moved to 3-0 in duals at 157, winning an 8-1 decision over Joseph Giordano thanks to a reversal and two third period takedowns.
Gardner-Webb took the 165-pound match by decision, but it was all MSU from then on. Graduate 174-pounder Connor O'Neill earned a third period escape to defeat Isaiah Guerrero by decision 6-5, and a first period takedown by redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Luke Vanadia provided himself enough cushion to defeat Hadyn Danals by decision to close the dual.
