Spartans Tie Washington, Lose B1G Tourney TItle on PK's

St. Louis, Mo -- No. 9 Michigan State and No. 13 Washington – the top two seeds in the Big Ten Tournament – played to a 1-1 draw in the Championship game ion St. Louis on Sunday. The Huskies took home the Tournament trophy and Big Ten auto bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 4-1 win in Penalty Kicks.
All the game's scoring came in the opening 11 minutes of the game – Washington got on the board at 3:03 when Kalea Eichenberger put back a rebound off a block of her own shot, and the Spartans tied it up when Kayla Briggs converted a penalty kick – her sixth goal overall and second this season on the PK.
From there, the Spartans controlled the offensive flow, finishing the first half with 70% possession time, a 4-2 edge in shot attempts and 4-1 lead in corners. MSU outshot the Huskies 7-2 in the second period with an additional five corners, allowing Washington just one shot attempt.
The Huskies found a bit of offensive punch as the overtimes began – Spartan keeper Noelle Henning made all three of her saves in the 20 minutes of free soccer, but neither team could solve the other after 110 minutes. Washington keeper Tanner Ijams stopped three of MSU's PK attempts, and backstopped her team to a 4-1 win in the PK shootout to earn the title.
Michigan State now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Monday afternoon.

- MSU conceded the first goal of the game for the second straight contest. The Spartans are now 3-1-4 when their opponent scores first.

- Emerson Sargeant was named to the All-Tournament Team. She had both goals in the overtime win over UCLA in the semifinals.
