NOTES TO KNOW:
• Michigan State hockey puts a spotlight on cancer awareness throughout the month of November with its annual 'Spartans Full Strength' initiative, in partnership with the Stephen Swistak Memorial Fund. MSU players and staff will wear purple ribbons throughout the month.

• Swistak played four seasons at Michigan State from 2000-04 before completing his medical degree from MSU's College of Human Medicine in 2008. He had just started his job at Detroit Medical Center before being diagnosed with recurrent esophageal cancer, passing away in June 2015.

• Michigan State is ranked No. 1 in the USCHO.com poll and No. 1 in the USA Hockey poll for the third consecutive week. Last season the Spartans spent nine weeks as the consensus top team in the country.

• Michigan State is coming off a bye week to open Big Ten play. The Spartans last took the ice on October 24-25 in the Upper Peninsula, defeating Northern Michigan by scores of 4-0 and 6-2 on the road.

• Junior Tommi Mannisto and senior Tiernan Shoudy tied for the team-high in points against Northern Michigan with five each. Mannisto scored a team-best three goals and contributed two assists on the weekend, while Shoudy scored twice and had three assists. Shoudy won .676 percent of his face-offs (23-11).

• Mannisto was named Big Ten First Star of the Week last week following his five-point performance. He's the first top star of the week for the Spartans this season. Mannisto scored twice in the first period of game two against Northern Michigan, later assisting on both Shoudy goals for a career-best four points. He scored in game one of the series as well and has goals in three straight games entering this weekend against PSU.

• It was the first weekly B1G honor of Mannisto's career and the second of the season by a Spartan, joining senior Matt Basgall (Third Star, 10/21).

• Michigan State went 13/14 on the penalty kill in the series against Northern Michigan, going 6/6 in game one and 7/8 in game two of the series. Tiernan Shoudy scored a short-handed empty net goal in the final minutes of regulation of game two playing 6-on-4.

• Junior Trey Augustine and freshman Melvin Strahl each went 1-0 in goal against the Wildcats. In game one, Augustine recorded his second shutout victory of the year and the eighth of his career making 24 saves. Strahl made 22 saves in his NCAA debut in game two.

• Michigan State ranks #9 nationally in scoring defense (1.83), #10 in scoring offense (3.83) and #6 in scoring margin (+2.00).
