Spartan senior earns first B1G weekly award of career
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State senior David Saye has been named the Big Ten Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the first time in his career, announced Monday by the conference office. Saye was recognized following a standout performance at the Big Ten Individual Championships this past weekend in Madison, Wisconsin.
Saye had an incredible showing in both singles and doubles action at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium against conference opponents. In singles play, Saye rattled off five straight victories to place him in the tournament final. After losing 0-6 in the first set of the final match, Saye managed to come out strong and defeated No. 61-ranked Michael Minasyan of Wisconsin, 0-6, 6-3, 10-5, to take the singles title.
This victory marks Michigan State's first fall Big Ten Individuals Championship win since 1971, when Mike Madura took the crown.
In doubles action, Saye teamed up with sophomore Mitchell Sheldon, and the duo went 4-0, taking them to the final round, where they dominated on the court. Battling Matthew Fullerton and Patrik Meszaros of Wisconsin, on their home turf, the standout Spartan duo was able to come out victorious, 6-1.
Saye and Sheldon are the first Spartan doubles champions to win the B1G Individual Championships since 1967.
Michigan State men's tennis is back in action at the ITA Sectionals, Thursday-Sunday, Nov. 6-9, down the road in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
