Michigan State Women’s Tennis Kicks Off First Day of Spartan Invite

MSU women’s tennis has fierce competition on the first day of play.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's tennis kicked off the first day of the Spartan Invitational, presented by Auto Owner's Insurance, on Friday at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center, notching multiple wins for the team.
The morning began with doubles matches between Michigan State and Indiana. The Hoosiers gave the Spartans fierce contention early on in the day.
First to finish their match was the pairing of sophomore Ellie Blackford/senior Matilde Morais, who took their match against Hoosiers Li Hsin Lin/Nicole Sifuentes, 6-1.
The following doubles competitions were tight competitions, with both teams going into a tie break.
The Spartan duo of senior Sarah Fazlagic/redshirt-junior Oriana Parkins-Godwin was narrowly defeated in a tie break against Chase Boyer/Magdalena Swierczynska of Indiana, 7-6 (7-1).
Following closely in a narrow victory was senior Issey Purser/redshirt-junior Hanna Tsitavets versus Elisabeth Dunac/Ameia Sorey, slating a 7-6(7-1) victory.
Singles matches took place after doubles, with six Spartans competing against the Xavier Musketeers.
Fazlagic was first to fall in a 6-1, 6-1 deficit against Xavier's Abigail Siminski.
Similarly, Parkins-Godwin dropped her match in a 6-4, 6-3 versus Emily Flowers.
Purser ultimately retired from her match due to illness against Natalie Smitek, 5-7, retire [ill.].
Blackford was first to claim a singles victory for the Green & White, winning her match against Madeleine Rexroat, 6-2, 6-2.
Tsitavets took her match in a similar fashion at 6-2, 6-4, facing off against Ellasyn DeFord.
Finishing out the day for the Spartans was Morais, dropping her match against Abby Nugent ,7-5, 2-6, 2-6.
The Green & White return to the courts on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. for the second day of the Spartan Invite, before wrapping up the weekend tournament on Sunday.
