EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State senior defenseman Matt Basgall has been named the Big Ten's Third Star of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.
The Spartan captain aided MSU in a sweep of then No. 1-ranked Boston University on road last weekend earning wins by scores of 4-2 and 4-3 (OT). Basgall had a three-point weekend for Michigan State, tallying a pair of assists in game one and scoring the game-winning overtime goal in game two on a one-time off a feed from freshman Ryker Lee.
Basgall's goal, combined with a game-saving clearance off the goal line by sophomore Shane Vansaghi at the other end, was named the top play on SportsCenter's Top 10 for Sunday, Oct. 19.
Basgall is tied for the team-high in goals this season through four games with two and is second on the team in total points with four. The Spartan defense helped shut down a BU power play that entered last weekend ranked No. 10 nationally in success rate, killing all four power play chances in Saturday's second game.
Already with two game-winning goals to his resume this season, Basgall is tied for the nation's lead in game-winning goals by a defenseman.
