Spartan Men’s Soccer Falls to Wisconsin Friday

Two second-half goals put the game out of reach for MSU.
MADISON, Wis. — Michigan State men's soccer surrendered a pair of second-half goals, falling to Wisconsin, 2-0, Friday night at McClimon Soccer Stadium. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak against Wisconsin.
With the loss, Michigan State falls to 5-6-1 this season and 2-4-1 in Big Ten action. Wisconsin improves to 5-6-0 overall record and stands 2-4-0 in league play. The Spartans have been shutout in their last two contests.
MSU welcomed back sophomore midfielder Brandon Munson to the starting lineup. Munson missed six games after suffering a lower leg injury at Washington on Sept. 12.
The Spartans had the bulk of possession early on. Wisconsin went on to take the final five shots of the first half, forcing redshirt-senior goalkeeper Zac Kelly to make three saves in the waning moments of the first half.
After 45 minutes, the game was tied 0-0.
In the second half, the Badgers came out as the aggressors. In the 69th minute, Wisconsin finally broke through with the would be game-winning goal. Matthew Zachemski's fourth goal of the season off of passes from Cristobal Porter and Thomas Raimbault.In the76th minute, the Badgers added a second goal with Raimbault's first goal of the season.
The Spartans tried to break into the deficit late in the game. In the 79th minute, freshman midfielder Chim Okeke challenged Wisconsin netminder Luke Shrivers. Fellow freshman midfielder JEB Knox also had a shot on goal in the 82nd minute.
For the game, Wisconsin out-shot Michigan State, 12-9. Shots were tied 5-5 in the second half. The Spartans were plagued by seven offsides calls.
Michigan State rreturns home to take on UCLA on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
