EAST LANSING, Mich. -Â Michigan State volleyball earned its first ranked win of the season with a 3-0 victory (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) over No. 20 Indiana Sunday afternoon inside the Breslin Center. The sweep was MSU's first over a ranked team since taking down No. 25 Missouri State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on December 1, 2017.Â
MSU moves to 14-2 and 4-2 in the B1G with the win, handing Indiana (14-2, 5-1 B1G) its first conference loss of the season and just second overall loss in 2025, snapping a six-match winning streak. The win was MSU's first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 USC on the road on Oct. 24, 2024, and first ranked win at home since a five-set win against Penn State on Oct. 28, 2023.Â
MSU hit .256 for the match and held the Hoosiers to just a .067 clip, the Hoosiers' worst hitting percentage in a single match this season. The Spartans led Indiana in service aces (4-to-2) and total blocks (9-7), while Indiana held a narrow advantage in kills (35-31) and digs (31-28).Â
Freshman outside hitter Bianca Mumcular led MSU in total kills with eight, while junior middle blocker added seven on a team-best .462 hitting, sophomore middle blocker Breccan Scheck tallied six and senior opposite Evie Doezema recorded five. Kulig also added a team-best four blocks and Scheck and Mumcular both provided three. Â
Junior libero Lia Schneider, junior outside hitter Karolina Staniszewska and junior defensive specialist Ky Clayton each totaled a team-high seven digs. All three also each added one service ace alongside sophomore defensive specialist Mya Bolton. Redshirt freshman Malayah Long led MSU in assists with 21.Â
Indiana was forced to call a timeout after MSU got out to a 9-4 lead early in the first set. The teams traded the following eight points back-and-forth until Indiana used a three-point run to get within two and force an MSU timeout at 13-11. The Spartans responded with a three-point swing of their own out of the timeout with kills from Mumcular, a block from Staniszewska and Kulig and a Doezema kill to extend the lead back to five at 16-11. After a Staniszewska kill made it 20-16 in favor of the Spartans, the Hoosiers rattled off three-straight points to get within a point at 20-19, but a kill from Long followed by a kill from Kulig forced another Indiana timeout at 22-19. The Hoosiers scored back-to-back points to get within one again at 22-21, but a 3-0 run from the Spartans to end the frame capped off by a Mumcular kill gave MSU the first set, 25-21.Â

After a back-and-forth start to the second set, the Hoosiers used a 4-0 run to take a 12-10 lead at the media timeout and extended their lead to 14-11 after a kill and service ace. Sophomore defensive specialist Mya Bolton used a service ace to get the Spartans within one at 17-16 before a block from Doezema and Scheck got the Spartans within a point again at 18-17. Indiana used a kill to extend the lead back to two, but kills from Staniszewska and Scheck followed by an Indiana error gave the Spartans a 20-19 lead to force a Hoosier timeout. MSU continued to roll out of the timeout, forcing another timeout after a Stansizewska kill and another Hoosier error made it 21-19 in favor of the Spartans, and fired off three-straight points with a solo Scheck block, Indiana error and Mumcular kill to end the frame on an 8-0 run and take the second set, 25-19.Â

A pair of Spartan errors and an Indiana block helped the Hoosiers use a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead early in the third. Staniszewska followed with a kill to tie the set at 5-5 before Indiana used another 3-0 run to extend their lead to three at 8-5. After an Indiana kill made it 9-6 in favor of the Hoosiers, the Spartans showed resilience once again after falling behind in the match, firing off six-straight points to take a three-point lead at 12-9. The Spartans and Hoosiers then traded points back-and-forth until a block from Scheck and Doezema and an explosive solo block from Staniszewska extended the MSU lead to five at 19-14 to force a Hoosier timeout. An Indiana attack error followed by a Clayton service ace then gave the Spartans a 21-14 lead out of the timeout. Indiana fought off two Spartan match points after a Hoosier attacking error got the Spartans to match point at 24-16, but a Hoosier service error sealed the final frame and match for MSU, 25-18. MSU held Indiana to just -.111 hitting in the final set.Â
