EAST LANSING, Mich. – Redshirt freshman Clayton Jones III earned a decision victory for Michigan State on Friday night, but the Spartans fell to No. 24-ranked Indiana, 35-3, at historic Jenison Field House.
The Spartans move to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in B1G duals this season, while Indiana improves to 6-2 (2-2 B1G). Michigan State returns to the mat on Sunday, January 26 when No. 7-ranked Nebraska comes to town.
Friday night's dual started with a tight contest at 125 where redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand led 9-7 after the first period. Weiand rolled through a takedown late in the first earning three for the takedown and four for a full set of swipes as he put No. 22-ranked Jacob Moran to his back temporarily. Ahead 10-8 with 40 seconds to wrestle, Moran got in on the legs of Weiand to earn the bout-clinching takedown right in front of the scorer's table.
Wins for the Hoosiers at 133 and 141 put the Spartans down 11-0 heading into the 149-pound bout where Jones met Aidan Torres. Jones used a swing single to earn his first takedown of the bout in period one, before extending his advantage to 7-3 in the second with a short time takedown. Torres got in on an ankle late but Jones held on for the victory.
Despite three losses for Michigan State at 157, 165 and 174, all bouts were tightly contested and could have gone either way. Fifth year Jay Nivison gave No. 14-ranked Tyler Lillard all he could handle at 165 with the two going into sudden victory knotted up at 1-1. Nivison was in on the legs of Lillard as time expired in the third. In sudden victory, Nivision once again had Lillard on one leg with :30 ticks to wrestle when Lillard used his falling backwards momentum to throw Nivison to his back for the fall.
Redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza took a 4-0 lead over No. 26-ranked Derek Gilcher in the second period after an escape and a swing single takedown. Garza maintained a 4-2 advantage late in the third, but a duck under by Gilcher helped him take Garza down with 13 seconds to go.
The marquee bout of the night at 197 featured a pair of ranked wrestlers in No. 23-ranked Gage Sollars and No. 25-ranked redshirt freshman Remy Cotton. Cotton scored earned with a double leg off the opening whistle and led 4-3 after one. After an escape and takedown put Sollars ahead 7-4, a locked hands and illegal cutback call helped Cotton get back into contention at 7-6. After a neutral start to the third, Sollars picked up another takedown and the riding time to win 11-6.
Indiana earned bonus points at 184 and heavyweight.
