EAST LANSING, Mich. – Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand, redshirt sophomore Cesar Garza and redshirt freshman Remy Cotton all added to their season win total on Sunday afternoon as Michigan State wrestling fell to Maryland 27-11 at Jenison Field House.
The Spartans move to 2-3 overall in dual meets with a 0-2 mark in B1G contests. MSU is off of Big Ten action next week but will face Buffalo for a non-conference dual at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19.
Sunday's dual got started at 125 pounds and Weiand started things strong for the Spartans. Weiand earned a first period takedown and cruised to a 5-1 decision over Maryland's Tyler Garvin for his second dual victory of the season.
Maryland took each of the next five bouts to gain a 17-3 team score advantage over Michigan State.
Garza got MSU back on the board at 174 pounds with an 11-6 decision over Branson John to improve to 3-2 in duals for the Spartans. A pair of second period takedowns put Garza ahead 8-5 heading into the final period where he tallied one final takedown in the final 30 seconds of the bout to win it.
Back in the lineup on Sunday, Cotton kept his strong start to the season going with a 20-4 tech fall victory over Chase Mielnik. Cotton led 6-1 through one following a pair of takedowns, and used two takedowns, an escape and a stall call to lead 14-2 going into the third. Cotton amassed over two minutes of riding time before two more takedowns secured the tech fall.
