11/9/2024 9:52:00 PM | Wrestling
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Redshirt freshman Caleb Weiand won the first tournament of his collegiate career on Saturday, winning the 125-pound freshman/sophomore bracket at the annual Michigan State Open inside historic Jenison Field House. The Spartans had three finalists and nine total placewinners on the day, including two wrestlers that wrestled back to place third in the open bracket.
"I'm very proud of our guys for wrestling hard in their first tournament of the year," said Michigan State head wrestling coach Roger Chandler. "Caleb Weiand came out and scored a lot of points to earn his first tournament victory for us. The MSU Open always has a strong field, and this year was no different."
It was the first tournament of the season for the Michigan State wrestling program, which will compete at the Black Knight Invitational on Sunday, November 24 and at the Midlands Championships in December. MSU will take its talents to Athens, Ohio next weekend for a dual at Ohio University on Sunday, November 17. No team scores were kept at the MSU open.
Weiand, along with fellow redshirt freshman Jack Conley (157) and Cory Thomas (184) advanced to the finals in the freshman/sophomore bracket on Saturday. Conley and Thomas each placed second, falling in the championship bout. True freshman Mason Stewart fell in the 157-pound semifinals in the freshman/sophomore bracket, later wrestling back to take fourth.
MSU had five competitors wrestle back to place in open bracket competition. Redshirt freshman Remy Cotton took third at 197 pounds, narrowly defeating teammate Kael Wisler in the third-place bout by decision. Redshirt junior Luke Daly suffered a first-round loss at 184 pounds but battled back to win three matches on the back side to take third. Semifinalists redshirt sophomore Ceasar Garza (174) and redshirt freshman Max Vanadia (HVY) each placed fifth.
Three Spartans reached the consolation quarterfinals, narrowly missing competing in a placement match. Redshirt junior Ryan Boucher won four matches at 174 pounds, including three-straight on the back end to reach the consolation quarters of the open bracket. True freshman Brodie Dominique won a pair of matches to advance to the consolation quarters in the 149-pound freshman/sophomore bracket.
