Saldate Improves to 4-0 in the Big Ten
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 20 Michigan State wrestling saw continued success at 157 pounds from No. 15 Chase Saldate, but the Spartans fell to the defending National Champion and top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions by a 34-6 score in dual action on Sunday inside Rec Hall.
Â
Saldate, a junior from Gilroy, California, notched his fifth-straight win and fourth consecutive in Big Ten Conference action, downing Penn State junior Terrell Barraclough by decision in 6-2 fashion. The Spartan star remains unbeaten against Nittany Lions in his collegiate career, boasting a 3-0 record against individuals from Penn State including two wins over Barraclough. MSU's captain and season-long starter at 157 scored two decisions against NCAA All-Americans a week ago and followed that performance with two more B1G decisions this week.
Â
Despite a valiant effort in the first bout of the afternoon from No. 24 Tristan Lujan, the Nittany Lions were able to notch an early decision with a 3-1 win in sudden victory from Gary Steen to put Penn State ahead 3-0. Top-ranked 133-pounder Roman Bravo-Young put his ranking on full display in the second bout of the day, winning by fall over 16th-ranked Rayvon Foley at the 6:25 mark of the match. Penn State's success continued with a 7-1 decision at 141 pounds, as fourth-ranked Beau Bartlett defeated Spartan redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan.

The Nittany Lion took a 2-1 lead into the second period and maintained his advantage on the scoreboard into the third despite allowing over a minute of riding time in the middle two minutes. Saldate booked an escape in the third, and with only 11 seconds remaining, notched a thrilling takedown in addition to a two-point near fall to book his fourth straight Big Ten win by way of a 6-2 decision.
