Capacity Crowd Sees No. 21 Spartans Log Two Top-10 Individual Wins Against No. 3 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Eleventh-ranked 133-pounder Rayvon Foley and 23rd-ranked 157-pounder Chase Saldate each published individual wins against opponents ranked inside the top-10, but the third-ranked Michigan Wolverines secured a 25-10 dual victory over No. 21 Michigan State wrestling on Friday night. MSU welcomed a crowd of 4,900 fans inside Jenison Field House, matching the facility's capacity for wrestling while setting the highest attendance mark at Michigan State in at least seven years.
With his season-high ranked win against No. 5 Dylan Ragusin, Foley published his highest ranked victory since defeating then-No. 3 Ronnie Bresser of Oregon State to earn NCAA All-America honors during the 2019 NCAA Championships. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native Foley completed his dual career against Michigan unscathed, publishing a 5-0 record against the Wolverines since joining the Spartans as a true freshman in 2017-18. Foley improves to 10-2 overall in the 2022-23 campaign and boasts the team's best dual record at 8-0.
Elsewhere, Saldate booked his first individually ranked win of the year at 157 against No. 8 Will Lewan. The Gilroy, California, native completed the second-highest ranked victory of his career, falling just short of matching his career-high decision over then-No. 7 Kendall Coleman of Purdue during the 2021 Big Ten Championships. Saldate climbs to 14-4 overall this year with a 7-1 dual record and sits in a tie with Foley and graduate Cameron Caffey with 31 dual points scored.
Michigan opened the night with a successful showing at 125 pounds, as Jack Medley put the first three team points on the board for the Wolverines, booking a 6-3 decision over No. 25 Tristan Lujan. The marquee matchup of the evening followed at 133 pounds, with 11th-ranked Foley squaring off against fifth-ranked Ragusin.
Ragusin got out to an early lead in the first period off a takedown in the opening moments, ultimately taking a 4-2 lead into the second period. Foley took command of the bout in the second stanza, registering a takedown and two-point near fall to surge ahead, also benefiting from Ragusin stalls to lead 8-4 through the second. Dominance from Foley continued in the final period, as the Spartan notched another takedown, benefited from yet another Ragusin stall, and tacked on the riding time point for good measure to secure the thrilling 12-4 major decision. MSU led 4-3 at the conclusion of two bouts.
The Wolverines returned the favor with a major decision at 141 pounds, with No. 23 Cole Mattin downing MSU redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan by an 11-3 score. Leading 7-4, Michigan scored another four points on a 10-2 major decision from No. 20 Chance Lamer over MSU's Peyton Omania at 149 pounds. The Spartans sought to curtail Michigan's momentum before the intermission, with No. 23 Saldate challenging eighth-ranked Lewan. After battling through the first three minutes without a score and exchanging one-point escapes in the ensuing two periods, the grapplers faced off in neutral for sudden victory. With 90 seconds remaining in the sudden victory period, Saldate forced Lewan over to the right side of the mat and concluded the match with a resounding takedown to seal the 3-1 decision.
Michigan returned to the driver's seat after a brief break, with the Wolverines booking decisions at 165 and 174. Sixth-ranked Cameron Amine defeated Caleb Fish, 3-2, just before Max Maylor finalized a 6-2 result over MSU freshman Ceasar Garza that gave Michigan a 17-7 team advantage. Ninth-ranked Matt Finesilver saw continued success for Michigan, with the Wolverine notching a 10-4 decision over No. 17 Layne Malczewski.
Graduate Cameron Caffey took the mat for MSU at 197 pounds moments later and finished the first period against Brendin Yatooma without score. Knotted up 4-all at the end of the second and 5-all at the end of the third, Caffey and Yatooma saw the Spartans and Wolverines square off in the second sudden-victory match of the evening. After going the full two minutes without points, both wrestlers entered the tiebreaker. Caffey rode Yatooma for the full 30 seconds, and after Yatooma conceded an escape in an attempt to book a deciding score, Caffey was able to hold his opponent back long enough to complete the 6-5 decision. After the Wolverines lost a team point for lack of control over the mat area, No. 2 Mason Parris published Michigan's final win of the night by way of a 4:09 fall over Ryan Vasbinder.
In defeat, the Spartans fall to 7-1 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten Conference dual competition. Michigan climbs to 6-0 with a 1-0 mark in the B1G. MSU tallied team points via major decision at 133 pounds, as well as decisions at both 157 and 197.

"I've been telling our guys the whole time they're special. They are a special group. We came up short tonight, but they are just going to have to make some individual adjustments personally. But the crowd and support we received tonight, it's really cool. I keep telling our guys that they built this, and they did, because they've been listening to everything their coaches have been saying. Seven years ago, we were lucky to have 500 people here. Tonight, we had 4,900. It's because they're an exciting group to watch wrestle, and you know people can see that wrestling means something to them when they compete."
On the individual efforts from Chase Saldate and Rayvon Foley...
"You know what I saw, is a sense of calmness that I haven't seen out of either one of them (Chase Saldate and Rayvon Foley) all year. And that is just mental growth, mental discipline. No matter what happened in the match, they kept their cool. Rayvon Foley goes down two takedowns to none to start the match, and he never lost focus on what he was out there to do. I think he ended up getting a major decision. And you know, on top of that, Rayvon Foley has never lost a dual meet to the University of Michigan, and he's from Ann Arbor. If you don't think that means something to him, you're sorely mistaken. It's very special, it was a very special night for both Rayvon and Chase."
