MINNEAPOLIS — Michigan State cross country heads to Minneapolis for the annual Roy Griak Invitational on Friday, Sept. 23. The meet, held at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course, will be the fourth meet of the season for the Spartan men and third for the Spartan women. Â
The men's 8k is set for 10:30 a.m. CT, while the women's 6k is slated for an 11:15 a.m CT start. The meet features three ranked teams on the men's side, including the No. 28 Spartans, and seven ranked teams on the women's side, including the Spartans who rank 23rd.Â
Both the men's and women's squads competed at last week's Spartan Invitational, with the Spartan men finishing third in a race where several of Michigan State's top runners were rested. Senior Aden Smith crossed the line first for the Spartans in a lifetime-best 24:35 for the 8k, while junior Owen Huard also grabbed a top-10 finish in seventh with a time of 24:48. Sophomore Jack Pennewell was the third finisher for Michigan State, clocking a time of 25:19 for 21st place. Junior Tyler Pritchett placed 50th in 25:50.Â
Friday's race will also feature Abdi-Fetah Ahmed, John Petruno, Alexander Penski, Drew Seabase, Andrew Nolan, and Fraser Wilson, who all competed at the Big Ten Preview Meet on Sept. 9. Ahmed finished first for the Spartans and second overall at the meet, crossing the line in 17:59 for the 6k, while Nolan finished in seventh in 18:17. Penski and Petruno both recorded top-20 finishes. Â
Seniors Jeremy Kloss and Joshua Smith will make their season debuts Friday.Â
The Michigan State women look to continue their success after dominating last week's Spartan Invitational. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hynes led the Spartans in a podium sweep, completing the 6k course in 21:07. Graduate student Katie Osika (21:14) and junior Makenna Veen (21:22) followed, while graduate student Grace Molloy finished in fifth in 21:31. Junior Emily Bardwell (21:46) and senior Lauren Freeland (21:47) finished ninth and 10th, respectively. Â
Sophomore Sophia Lucki and junior Taylor Visscher recorded top-20 finishes for the Spartans, while sophomore Katelyn Stewart-Barnett juniors Fatima Giron and Eleanor Kendell finished inside the top 50. Senior Abigail Lee placed 60th.Â
At last year's edition of the Roy Griak Invitational, Michigan State's men finished third, while the women's squad finished fifth. Â
"Our teams have been putting in the work and building the team culture," said Michigan State Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Lisa Breznau. "We're ready to compete this weekend in our quest for the championship portion of our season."Â
The Spartans will take the next two weeks off from competing before traveling to Madison, Wis. for the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Oct. 14. Â
